The purpose of this book is to give a concise introduction to the necessary techniques, and to present a simplified and extended version of the proof. It should enable mathematicians with a background in arithmetic algebraic geometry to understand some basic techniques in the rapidly evolving field of Arakelov-theory. Extractions: translated from German by Uwe F. Mayer Abstract: The proof of the conjecture mentioned in the title was finally completed in September of 1994. A. Wiles announced this result in the summer of 1993; however, there was a gap in his work. The paper of Taylor and Wiles does not close this gap but circumvents it. This article is an adaptation of several talks that I [Gerd Faltings] have given on this topic and is by no means about my own work. I have tried to present the basic ideas to a wider mathematical audience, and in the process I have skipped over certain details, which are in my opinion not so much of interest to the non-specialist. The specialists can then alleviate their boredom by finding those mistakes and correcting them. Key words: Fermat's Last Theorem, elliptic curves, modular forms, deformations. Extractions: Gerd Faltings is a German mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honour that a young mathematician can receive, in 1986, primarily for his proof of the Mordell Conjecture which he achieved using methods of arithmetic algebraic geometry. He has also been closely linked with the work leading to the final proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles. In 1983 Faltings proved that for every n > 2 there are at most a finite number of coprime integers x, y, z with xn + yn = zn. This was a major step but a proof that the finite number was in all cases did not seem likely to follow by extending Falting's arguments. Fermat's last theorem (also called Fermat's Great Theorem ) states that there are no positive natural numbers a b , and c such that in which n is a natural number greater than 2. About this the 17th-century mathematician Pierre de Fermat wrote in in his copy of Claude-Gaspar Bachet's translation of famous Diophantus Arithmetica , "I have discovered a truly remarkable proof but this margin is too small to contain it". The reason why this statement is so significant is that all the other theorems proposed by Fermat were settled either by proofs he supplied, or by more rigorous proofs supplied afterwards. Mathematicians long were baffled by this statement, for they were unable either to prove or to disprove it. The theorem has the credit of the largest number of wrong proofs! For various special exponents n , the theorem had been proved over the years, but the general case remained elusive. In
