RESEÑA BIOGRAFICA Siendo Nicomedes esencialmente poeta, su evolución autodidacta lo condujo a diversificarse en varias facetas que desarrolló simultáneamente. A su muerte se habla de un Nicomedes folklorista, actor, ensayista, promotor cultural, comunicador social, hombre de radio, de TV., periodista. En un inicio Nicomedes fue artesano, cerrajero artístico, oficio que mantuvo durante 19 años. En 1949 cuando ya tenía 24 años (nace el 24 de junio de 1925) compuso su primera décima convirtiéndose así en el último de los decimistas repentistas aquellos que improvisaban cuartetas y enseguida las décimas. Muy pronto su poesía rebaza los límites del canto popular, «dejó de ser maestro forjador del hierro para convertirse en forjador de la palabra... (M.L.VII 92)». Lamentablemente la décima cantada es hoy una tradición discontinuada, algo que ya nadie cultiva. Por ello Nicomedes debió dejar el canto de desafío. Al virar hacia otras formas, entró en una etapa de fecunda producción. Desde 1956 su actividad pública en teatros y radioemisoras lo torna un personaje de gran popularidad, que, al alto nivel artístico de sus décimas añade una necesaria «orgullosa negritud». En 1958 al incursionar en temas costumbristas da paso hacia la estampa musical. Un año después con su hermana Victoria funda la compañía Cumanana. La acción conjunta de Victoria y Nicomedes en esos días fue decisiva, tuvo un efecto revitalizador en el languideciente folklore negro. Cumanana produce obras de teatro, música y danzas hasta 1961. Luego Nicomedes se adentra cada vez más en la investigación documentada del folklore.

Al cabo de cinco días de infructuosas diligencias, Nicomedes Toro regresó a su hogar, con visibles muestras de haber sido víctima de apremios ilegítimos. El afectado relató a sus padres haber permanecido recluido en los subterráneos de Investigaciones, habiéndose estampado una denuncia en su contra, ante un Juzgado del Crimen, por el supuesto delito de robo de una máquina calculadora. Nicomedes Toro concurrió en diversas oportunidades al Tribunal, sin que jamás se le diera una explicación satisfactoria; sólo un actuario le manifestó confidencialmente "váyase fuera del país, porque aquí no lo dejarán tranquilo".

A poet, folklorist, musicologist, composer and historian of Afro-Peruvian music and culture, he was responsible for the present popularity and resurgence of Afro-Peruvian music. In the 1950's, he began compiling and rejuvenating Afro-Peruvian cultural forms. Later, as a student and supporter of the Black conciousness movement, he used radio and television as forums for bringing many unknown Afro-Pervuians musicians to public attention. In addition to being a preserver of Afro-Peruvian music, Nicomedes Santa Cruz was a great writer. He published numerous books of Afro-Latino culture and traditions. He has done comparisons of the origin of African influenced dances and rhythms of music from Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay. He is known as one of Perú's best poets. He also came from an important Afro-Peruvian family, the Santa Cruz family, a family with known for it's preservation on Black Peruvian culture. Nicomedes Santa Cruz passed away in 1980.
