   Extractions: Henry White attended Cazenovia Seminary where his father was a teacher of elementary mathematics and surveying. From there White entered the Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut, which was founded in 1831 by a group of Methodists. At the Wesleyan University White was taught mathematics by Van Vleck 's father. Klein 's supervision, the doctorate being awarded for the thesis in 1891. On his return to the United States, White was appointed to Clark University, then professor of pure mathematics at Northwestern University before being appointed, in 1905, as professor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Vassar College was then a college for women, founded to provide women with a quality of education previously only available to men. Grace Hopper was one who benefitted from the quality education provided there.

Little is known about White except that he was a London solicitor who was prominent as an amateur photographer for a decade or so after 1854. Besides a profound affiliation with Pre-Raphaelite work. White's landscape studies anticipate the rigorous avant-garde vision of the 1920's and 30's, particularly the close-up studies of natural artefacts.

D.—WHITE, GILBERT His publications include The Greater States of Continental Europe (1874); A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (2 vols., 1896), his most important work, his Autobiography (2 vols., New York, 1905) and Seven Great Statesmen (1910). to the forces; and on the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899 he was given command of the forces in Natal. He defeated the Boers at Elandslaagte on the 2ist of October 1899 and at Reitfontein on the 24th; but the superior numbers of the Boers enabled them to invest Ladysmith,- which Sir George White defended in a siege lasting 119 days, from the 2nd of November 1899 to the ist of March 1900, in the course of which he refused to entertain Sir Redvers Buller's suggestion that he should arrange terms of capitulation with the enemy (see LADYSMITH, SIEGE and RELIEF OF). After the relief of Ladysmith, White, whose health had been impaired by the siege, returned to England, and was appointed governor of Gibraltar (1900-1904). King Edward VII., who visited the fortress in 1903, personally gave him the baton of a field maishal. In 1905 Sir George WThite was appointed governor of Chelsea Hospital, and in the same year was decorated with the Order of Merit. See T, F. G. Coates, Sir George White (1900).

" The Whigs, seizing on this political misstep, in 1840 presented their candidate William Henry Harrison as a simple frontier Indian fighter, living in a log cabin and drinking cider, in sharp contrast to an aristocratic champagne-sipping Van Buren. Harrison was in fact a scion of the Virginia planter aristocracy. He was born at Berkeley in 1773. He studied classics and history at Hampden-Sydney College, then began the study of medicine in Richmond. Suddenly, that same year, 1791, Harrison switched interests. He obtained a commission as ensign in the First Infantry of the Regular Army, and headed to the Northwest, where he spent much of his life.
