Extractions: No Super League Curling Jan 9/03 Jan 1st The Tankard Playdowns are now under way. There are 7 Teams particapating in a round robin format. Three games have been played to date with three to be played in the comming week. Our club will be hosting the Scots on Jan 9 as the cross Canada Tour gets under way. We will be playing them in the afternoon and hosting the Official Opening Dinner in the evening. The Strathcona Cup This illustrious curling trophy- representing the oldest international curling competition in the world and which also is probably the most famous in all the history of the game - had an odd beginning. Donald Smith, a Scot from Duffown on the upper reaches of the River Spey in Scotland, came to Canada and carved out a distinguished career with The Hudson's Bay Company, got involved with the Riel Rebellion, and then became a leader in the building of C.P.R. For these and other services to the British Empire, he was appointed to the House of Lords as Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal and named the High' Commissioner of Canada in London.
