George Jones and Charles Clover. Tony Blair was facing open revolt in the Labour Party last night over a compromise proposal to allow foxhunting under certain conditions. Labour MPs described as a fudge the new Hunting Bill which would outlaw hare coursing and stag hunting in England and Wales but would let foxhunting continue if it were given the goahead by an independent registrar. Ratting and rabbiting with dogs would also be allowed.

Extractions: Hounds are bred for stamina not speed, a fox can easily out run any hound but only over a short distance. A pack of hounds is anything up to about 40 hounds. (20 couples in hounds in hunting trems). The hunt will have more hounds than what they take out day to day, but these are kept so that any hounds injured/killed etc... can be rested or replaced by the extra hounds. Usually no feed is given to the hounds the day before the hunt in ordeer to heighten their sensibilities. The average hound's hunting life is about 5 years. An 'old' hound will either be killed off, donated/sold to a mink hunt or maybe used to breed from. It has been known for slaughtered hounds to have been fed back to the rest of the pack.

The most famous huntsman of course being John Peel from Caldbeck. The song D'ye Ken John Peel is almost the Cumbrian national anthem. He eloped to marry his true love at Gretna Green. He became somewhat obsessed with hunting, forming his own pack He became so famous for the number of kills and the success of his pack that 3,000 turned out for his funeral. The song became the adopted anthem of the Border Regiment.

I dont believe their spin about its economic importance. I am against cruelty to animals, and all things being equal I would support a ban. But all things are not equal just the opposite. And it has turned me into a sympathiser for those fighting off hunt-hating Labour MPs, who are waging a campaign in hypocrisy, intellectual fraud and blatant class war. They are so awash in their own dismal multicultural propaganda they dont even realise what hypocrites they are. That hypocrisy has a name: it is halal butchery, when modern painkilling techniques are not used. And before I am accused of Islamophobia, it has a another name, shechita (or Jewish ritual slaughter).

And I, like many millions of citizens, feel deeply offended that this barbaric cruelty is allowed to continue for as long as it has. I was brought up in the country. I can recall our chickens being killed by a fox. I have no love of foxes and believe they should be culled, but surely they should be killed properly? Chasing an animal for pleasure until it is totally exhausted and then ripping it to shreds is cruel. Hunting continues to offend many millions, because many of us sincerely believe that this barbaric cruelty has no place in a civilised society.
