    Extractions: Braemar Gathering and Highland Games A world-famous colourful and popular event with a long history Each year the village of Braemar, Scotland invites people from all over the world to attend the Braemar Gathering and Highland Games. The Gathering is always held on the first Saturday in September and it is perhaps the most famous and finest Highland Games anywhere. It features the finest Pipe Bands, pipers, Highland dancers, and athletes in a beautiful setting surrounded by hills. The patron of the Gathering is Her Majesty the Queen. Her Majesty the Queen arriving in Braemar to visit the Braemar Gathering and Highland Games Braemar has many connections with ancient Scottish royalty and it is believed that King Malcolm Canmore and his army camped here before going on to defeat McBeth at a battle near Lumphanon in 1057. King Malcolm (III) ruled Scotland until 1093 and was king at the time of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. During his reign it is said that he called the Clans to the Braes O' Mar that he might 'by keen and fair contest' select his hardiest soldiers and fleetest messengers. King Malcolm's wife, Margaret, was well educated (and later sanctified) and it is possible that she had read about the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. Highland games as we know them are a more recent development. The current Braemar Gathering and Highland Games can trace its roots back to 1816 when the Braemar Wright's Friendly Society was formed. (The society being formally registered the following year, just two years after the defeat of Napolean at Waterloo.) The entry money for each member was 10 shillings (50p) with a quarterly subscription of 1 shilling. The Society was re-constituted in July 1826 as the Braemar Highland Society. The 'athletics' competition was held under the auspices of the society for the first time on 23rd August 1832.

    Extractions: BATHGATE HIGHLAND GAMES HOW IT ALL BEGAN A factual account Passing through villages, advertising highland games, on our return from the Cowal games in 1972, Alex suggested that we could have our own games in Bathgate. The committee decided to choose a neutral chairman, and Mr. William Bishop, a retired councillor and ex-piper with West Calder pipe band was elected, a position which he held for 3 years. Jim McLeod of the Palais Dance Hall let us have the use of his establishment to hold a fund raising ceilidh, which went well. The British Championships were held in Bathgate for 11 years before the R.S.P.B.A. started moving it around. Alex Samuel and George E. Baxter S.B.St.J. May they rest in peace. In 1997 we held our 25th anniversary event, and we have continued to build on the successes that started way back in 1972. This year being our 31st I am sure that with the help of the committee and the volunteers that turn out every year to support us come rain or shine, we will continue to have a successful event for many years to come.     Extractions: A hand woven sample was first made by a firm headed by Jean-Jacques and Paula Redslob from Newton, North Carolina. This sample was than sent to The Scottish Tartan Society, in Pitlochry,Scotland to be Officially entered in the Register of All Publicly Known Tartans (Registered). Following this Official Registration on November 26,1999, a weaving firm, Strathmore Woollen Co. Ltd. in Forfar, Scotland was commissioned to do the weaving. The initial steps in the creation of this tartan were begun in mid August, 1999 and completed in Early April, 2000.
