We play games based on real battles, our favourite films, SF series, using infra-red firing guns to resolve fights and battles. Some games involve a fair amount of intelligence and devious role-playing, while others are straight gun fights. Both types of game are a lot of fun. After the game, of course, there's usually a huge camp-fire with huge amounts of beer being consumed. Tagging appeals to a wide variety of people (all ages, male and female), not just frustrated gun-bunnies like myself and Pete, and we've met some of our best friends through this hobby. Here's a photo of my brother Pete (trying to look manly and almost succeeding!) and our friend Jenny Watson. Just coming through the gate at the back is Dave Bodger. For months before Worlds of Wonder finally released Lazer Tag, the company built up suspense to unbelievable levels with a series of teasing ads. We knew it was called “Lazer Tag,” we knew it would change the world of sports—heck, even the whole world—but exactly what it was remained a mystery. Slowly it began to take shape: There was a gun (good so far), there was a cat-and-mouse pursuit (still with you), and it somehow involved lasers (sold!). Lazer Tag finally reached its hungry public in the summer of 1986, and while it may not have lived up to everyone’s imagination (sorry, no death ray), it was still very, very cool. Technically not a laser, the Lazer Tag StarLyte guns actually fired infrared blasts, triggering a signal in the StarSensors players wore on their chests (possibly as part of a StarBelt or StarVest, topped off by a StarHelmet). Each time the sensor was hit, another LED marker would light up in the StarSensor, and after six hits, that player was out of the game. Helpful ads on TV and in comic books showed kids how to play the game, usually set in some kind of futuristic stadium with plenty of obstacles and eerie lighting effects (though any home or playground would do).

    Extractions: The kids needed protection from another futuristic being, a villainous relative of Jamie's named Draxon Drear, who led a group of genetically engineered werewolf-like beings known as the Skuggs. Drear and the Skuggs' spaceship had crashed into the Atlantic Ocean at some point in the past, but they were unwittingly awakened from suspended animation in the 80's by Professor Olanga. The baddies had traveled back in time to destroy Beth because she would eventually create the Starlyte gun and Starsensor worn by Jamie (In a bizarre chronological paradox, these same items were already available for purchase before the show premiered. Luckily, the fabric of space and time did not fold in upon itself and destroy all existence). These machines enabled the able-bodied young heroine to stun others and move items around, which came in handy in the many battle scenes featured on the series.

They're slow, inefficient, wasteful, redundant (like this sentence) and really pretty useless for anything but giving idiots jobs and everybody who must deal with them grey hair. Anyway, here follows my tale of my only encounter (so far) with the lethargic mass that is the University of Kentucky beaurocratic system... I was living in one of the dorms on the northern end of campus, specifically, Patterson Hall. It's a nice place. Since dorms cannot be nice places, they are renovating it in 2000 to make the rooms smaller. This is sort of good, as the fire department estimates that if it caught on fire, the whole place would be ashes in 5.3 minutes (actual figure!), and the fire escape is condemned. Anyway, to escape the constant anxiety of living in a fire trap, I and some friends and my roommate decided we'd try to play that fun game for rich kids in the late eighties, Lazer Tag. The game works by strapping a BRIGHT RED sensor to your chest and then shooting a gun-shaped thing that equates to a remote TV control at the other people. If you hit the sensor, they beep for a second. You can get hit about six times before your sensor squeals and then turns off; that means you're dead. It's kinda fun. So, the night before, I and some of these other friends, hereafter referred at their requests as Sanjo (the owner of the guns), Turkey (my roommate), Wendigo, and Benji, purchased a large number of batteries, and the six of us (hoho! Yes, I can count. The other person is described below) set out to play.
