Extractions: A s we have learned over the last two years, Baffin Island provides opportunities for sea kayaking adventures that are unparalleled in their scenic beauty, challenging paddling and opportunities for real wilderness experience. During the first two weeks of August, 1998, six intrepid explorers pushed the envelope by venturing into largely untraveled area south of Jackman Sound on the south side of Frobisher Bay, approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Iqaluit. The trip was especially significant as it was the first expedition to depart for the CAH base at Jackman Sound. Our group included both experienced arctic hands such as Richard Weber, Candace Wilson of Toronto and me, Tim Goodsell of Chicago as well as Dave Witzke and Kelly Callfas of Tiverton Ontario and Lynn Osmond of Chicago. Lynn was declared the winner of the "Most Outrageously Bold" award for undertaking the 16 day expedition after only a three-day training trip on Lake Superior, the sum total of her prior camping experience. The base camp proved to be an excellent launching point for the trip. It allowed us to get set up in relative comfort while providing initial acclimation to the Arctic environment. We spent a pleasant day sorting gear, packing food and becoming familiar with the brand new Current Designs Libra XT tandem kayaks. Tandems are the preferred mode of kayaking in the arctic. They are stable, especially in choppy seas, carry a huge amount of gear and provide the opportunity for conversation and companionship during extended periods of paddling. They are also very fast!
