Extractions: Perusing the various sports websites one day last week, I struck upon the news that young actor Tobey Maguire, star of the summer blockbuster Spiderman, had landed the role of the jockey in an upcoming movie about the famed 1930s horse Seabisquit. The tidbit wasn't so interesting, but it did get me to thinking about what sports movies are my favorites of all time. Not the ones the critics perceive as the best. The sports films I've enjoyed viewing the most, and the ones I believe are fine blends of athletics and drama or comedy. And since summer is the height of movie releases and viewership, I figured this to be an appropriate moment to jot down my own evaluations. One other note, important in my opinion, is that the sport and the actual game action are vital to the plot. For that reason, some of the perceived top movies in a genre may be missing from list. So, here it goes.

"Pick me out a winner, Bobby"?! "My dad wanted me to be a baseball player." Sixth!? Come on. Equally as disagreeable is that they put Bull Durham at number one. (Sorry if I spoiled it for you.) Bull Durham is a nice little flick, but in the pantheon of sports movies, it is seriously over-rated. I don't care much for any of Ron Shelton's movies because he doesn't do a lot of what folks in the business call "character development." Characters who are immature doofuses at the beginning of his movies are usually still immature doofuses at the end. This leaves me sitting in the theater thinking, "And I sat through two hours of this...for what, exactly?" But I digress. Are you honestly telling me that "Bull Durham" is better than "Rocky"? Than "Field of Dreams"? Than "Caddyshack"? Please.

There are movie lines that are now just a part of my everyday vocabulary. Some of these movies make me laugh; some of them make me cry. Whatever the emotion, nothing is as powerful as a good movie. Crazy as it sounds, sports movies are some of the most powerful I have encountered, and there are so many I could watch and enjoy everyday. With this in mind, here is a far-from-complete list of some of the best sports movies of my time, complete with best characters and favorite lines. Not all of the classics are here, but this sampling contains some of the best. These are the movies that have shaped my life: Best baseball movie, dramatic: "The Natural." Best character: Roy Hobbs. Movie quote: "God, I love baseball." Hobbs. Robert Redford is incredible as the the legendary Hobbs. This movie can do it all to you; it can make you laugh, it can make you cry. Any man who says that he didn't have his eyes water up in the final scene is lying. Real men can cry (in this movie anyway).

Hockey To me, this is the only exciting sport in the Winter Games, although I realize a lot of people approach hockey with the same amount of dread as soccer.
