The season for cricket begins in September and runs for six to eight weeks. The spring season begins in mid-March and concludes in April. Ephedrine already is banned by the National Football League, National Collegiate Athletic Association, International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and the International Olympic Committee. Bechler, an Orioles pitching prospect from Medford, Oregon, died Monday, February 17 following a fainting spell a day earlier at Spring training camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Xenadrine, which contains ephedrine, was reportedly found in his locker. Early press reports indicate he may have routinely taken 3 pills each morning. Over the last decade, ephedra has accelerated in popularity, winning mainstream acceptance as a weight-loss supplement and as a workout enhancer. The dangers of this stimulant are clear as it increases the heart rate and blood pressure, a deadly combination with an athlete in high-intensity workouts. A 2000 New England Journal of Medicine-published study implicated ephedra, a root chemical in ephedrine, in 54 deaths and approximately 1,000 serious illnesses.
