Since his death interest in his neo-romantic music has waned, but he has never fully disappeared from the repretoire. His only opera, Merry Mount, was one of the Met's most successful essays into new American works in the thirties, both artistically and with the public. (At its premiere, the opera recieved a total of fifty curtain calls, still a house record.) Hanson was also an important musical educator and helped promote the music of such composers as Roy Harris and Jack Beeson. He was first taught music by his mother and progressed to various locations to expand on his musical education, first attending Luther College in Wahoo and later moved on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. By 1919, Howard became the Dean of the Conservatory of Fine Arts. In 1921, he was awarded the first American Prix de Rome in Music for his "California Forest Play of 1920". Howard had a long lasting impact on music education when in 1924 George Eastman selected Howard to be director of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Hanson ran the school for 40 years, retiring in 1964. In 1925, Hanson began a series of orchestral concerts to showcase American Composers. His career highlights include: Symphony No. 1

The Keystone performance is fine, but someday it would be nice if the Fennell/Eastman mono recording ever made it to CD. I have not yet heard the Rutgers recording of Laude Works Performers Reviews Stores Chorale and Alleluia Keystone Wind Ensemble

Main Street, Ashland OR Ashland artist Alicia Mannix will show 15 of her works for a month and a half at Plaza Cafe, 47 North Main Street, including a preview of a piece selected among the finalists for publicity for the first Ashland Independent Film Festival. The exhibit opened September 11, runs through October 15 and includes works in acrylic, pastel and gouache in Mannix’s stark-bold expressionistic style, with inspirations of Southern Oregon life. The Plaza Cafe show includes her painting, “The Watchers,” a 4’X5’ mixed media work, in a preview of her part of a First Friday October 5 opening at Hanson Howard Gallery, 82 North Main Street. The Hanson Howard show will feature the art selected as finalists for the Ashland Independent Film Festival’s publicity illustration competition. The AIFF is in its first year, and operates in part with a grant from the city of Ashland. The festival runs October 4-8. Mannix also is currently showing in the new Cafe Dacx, 1937 NW Place, in Portland, through October 3.

    Extractions: When Howard Hanson retired in 1964 after serving 40 years as the director of the Eastman School of Music, his service to the University of Rochester was extended as the director of a newly created Institute of American Music. The purpose of the Institute, which was established as a University entity outside of the administrative structure of the School, was to continue Dr. Hanson’s tradition for promoting the understanding and appreciation of American music through performance, publication, and recording. The modest funds upon which the Institute has operated derive principally from royalties on compositions and recordings executed during Dr. Hanson’s tenure at the Eastman School. When Howard Hanson died in 1981, his wife Peggy assumed the role of the Institute’s director for a short time. However, as her health declined over the years, the Institute became less active. Following Mrs. Hanson’s death in 1996, the Institute was reorganized and new board members named. About Howard Hanson
