Extractions: - The idea was very old. I wanted to make a documentary film about the Icelandic composer Jon Leifs who was born in 1899. He lived for a while in Germany and then came to Iceland where he was totally rejected by the Icelandic nation. His works were not played because he was regarded as a very difficult personality. When I was studying filmmaking in Munich a friend of mine came to me. He was just finishing his thesis on this man and he told me that if someone really wanted they could make the name Leifs important to the Icelanders. These were such absurd words, I thought, that I had to find out if they were true. So I called him nine years later and told him that we had work on that. At that time, it was in 1989, there was hardly any music published by this man. Now, in 1997 you can buy the music of Jon Leifs in most European countries. In 1989, we started to collect such materials as personal letters of his family, and diaries and to work on the script for the documentary.

Den isländske kompositören Jón Leifs (1899-1968) tycks emellertid faktiskt vara på god väg att bli det. Denne kompositör som i livstiden var en av de mest kontroversiella gestalterna i det isländska samhället ses nu som en av den skandinaviska 1900-talsmusikens giganter. En ny lyssnargeneration har tagit till sig det ytligt sett råa och primitiva i många av hans verk, däribland "Hekla", den massivt högljudda återgivningen av ett vulkanutbrott i musik till vars CD-version för tre år sedan det faktiskt medföljde ett par öronproppar. Åhlén känner Leifs’ musik väl – den har fascinerat honom alltsedan Helsingforspremiären på "Hekla" år 1964, och hans artikel om tonsättaren i tidskriften "Tonfallet" för över tio år sedan var en milstolpe i Leifsforskningen. För sitt nya magnum opus har Åhlén inte bara gått igenom Leifs’ enorma samling av brev och manuskript (han var känd för att aldrig kasta bort något som han trodde kunde vara av intresse för senare generationer), utan också samlat mängder av material i svenska och tyska bibliotek. Resultatet är ett engagerande porträtt av en nationell kompositör i en utomståendes perspektiv. Dess huvudteser är kanske inte så välunderbyggda som man kunnat önska (och där finns förvisso små felaktigheter), men icke desto mindre har Åhlén gjort Leifs’ beundrare en stor tjänst och hans bok kommer utan tvivel att förbli standardverket i många år framåt.

Extractions: For those quick to discount the talents of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis as a composer, give "At the Octoroon Balls" a listen. It might surprise you. Filled with Americana references and plenty of New Orleans soul, Marsalis's first string quartet composition is a real treat. Granted, Marsalis is no Copland, but his jazz-meets-chamber-music style is unique and the added instrumental cuts from of his "A Fiddler's Tale" album are equally memorable. "Piano Concertos Nos. 10, 19, 20" These are glorious performances of three very different piano concertos by Mozart. Martha Argerich tears into No. 20's darkness with great fury, abetted by Rabinovitch's tense, turmoil-filled accompaniment; she plays Beethoven's appropriately heavy cadenzas with brilliance, and her headlong blaze into the final movement is breathtaking. Rabinovitch plays and leads No. 19 with charm and virtuosity. All told, a delightful disc.
