Meeting Hugh O'Brian
Rosemont, Illinois
May 19, 2002
By Jim Alexander
The room opened at 10, and shortly after it opened, I spoke with an individual that I'm guessing (though I could be wrong) was O'Brian's business manager regarding a potential interview, etc. She said that O'Brian would discuss doing an interview when he got there... and that he was late because he normally utilized Sunday mornings to conduct a certain amount of HOBY (O'Brian's Youth Organization) business.
Shortly after 11, I saw the back of O'Brian's head from the opposite end of the dealer's room. It was a thrill knowing that he was thereand that he'd actually made it (the pessimistic side of me was telling me that SOMETHING would prevent him from attending), and I would have a chance to meet him. He had a steady stream of autograph seekers for about an hour, and since I knew that I'd take a while at his table... I let the "crowds" die down.
When the traffic dissipated, I approached (wearing my logo-embroidered shirt), and introduced myself, mentioning my interest in SEARCH. Upon my mentioning the series, O'Brian said, "That was a lot of fun to do," letting it appear that he had fond memories of the show. I brought up the www.probecontrol.com web page, and described it, and some of the features it contained. I showed him a print-out I'd done of the opening page of the site, and told him that John and Bryan and Don had archived film clip frames, scripts, QuickTime movies, Press Materials, and much more.

Richard McKenna High School Dedication
by Jim Alexander It is my pleasure to speak to you today on behalf of the Board of Trustees of School District 193. Today, however, I am proud to report to you as a soldier in the army of General Jose Luis Madarieta. I also thank Rick Ardinger of the Idaho Humanities Council and Alan Virta, director of BSU Special Collections for their help in retrieving and archiving these special documents. At first we referred to this school simply as the alternative school, then as Academy 2000, but as the millennium drew closer, we knew the name would have to change, so why Richard McKenna? Having grown up in Mountain Home myself, I found Richard McKenna to be a complete mystery. His name would surface from time to time, but how does one identify with someone unidentifiable? I was 13 years old when The Sand Pebbles was published. Our teachers told us that it was written by a man born and reared right here. But that was where it all stopped. I vaguely remember when he and Eva came for his class reunion, and the articles written by Bob Lorimar in the Mountain Home News, but first hand knowledge of Richard McKenna seemed almost nonexistent. I seriously doubted that we would find anything, but that was before I knew Jose and Shirley Lectka. They located Louise and Jimmy Crain, Tom Dorton , a shipmate of McKenna’s and membership chairman of the Yangtze River Patrol, and Dr. David Grover, historian of the Yangtze River Patrol . They also contacted the Department of the Navy as well as shipmates. The pieces of the puzzle fell together and I publicly thank each and every correspondent for the extraordinary compassion and consideration shown us.

Leadership awards and two Design Automation Fellowships. Jim Cohoon has been or is currently a member of the executive committees for ASPDAC, Design Automation Conference, Date, and EuroDac. He also served on the program committees for the Design Automation Conference and is a current member for the ICCAD Conference. He can be reached at cohoon@virginia.edu
Research
Jiim Cohoon concentrates his research investigations on important application areas such as VLSI design automation, transport scheduling, and use of the Internet. His interdisciplinary approach applies and extends non-traditional techniques such as computational geometry, probabilistic search, genetics, and parallel computing. He also generalizes the normal solution domain to take full advantage of all available capabilities. The result is a collection of state-of-the-art tools that are both very practical and theoretically interesting and which produce solutions that are markedly better than others. For example, his research group's most recent tool is Spiffy and Upstart, which together are a complete performance-oriented VLSI layout tool for FPGAs. The tools solutions are approximately both 10% faster and smaller than previously possible. Current tood development is exploring how to best produce 3D-FPGAs so that whole systems can be rapidly prototyped.

KOSHKIN: PARADE
Alexander Chekhov, guitar.
Classicolor 315 2103
Reviewed by Jim Tosone.
Usher-Valse is based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. Once again, Chekhov projects the intensity of the opening section, with its bright and brittle staccatos. In the middle section, he captures the spirit of a melody that starts out sane but ultimately descends into a madness of intensely strummed chords, buzzing strings and eerie harmonics. An excellent performance. Five Pieces from Mascarades reminds me of the compositional style of Milan Tesar, in that it is a tonal five-movement work in which individual movements range from one to two minutes in length. The piece is pleasant enough, but does not have that distinctive quality of Koshkin's other works. The next two pieces are Avalon and Merlin's Dream, which are based on Malory's Morte d' Arthur. Merlin's Dream is an imaginative work characterized by a tremolo-based melody. The final work on this recording is the title track Parade, a blues-style piece reminiscent of Charlie Byrd's Three Blues for Classical Guitar. It is a charming ending to a wonderful recording. There is an energy to Chekhov's playing that brings out the fundamental qualities in Koshkin's writing. Those interested in other compact disc recordings of Koshkin's works should also consider Vladimir Milkulka's recording The Prince's Toys (BIS CD-240). Guitarists should note that the music has been published for Elves, Five Pieces from Mascarades and Merlin's Dream. Recommended.

Jim and Helen Alexander Awana Club Missionaries 7 Okell Lane Fraziers Bottom, WV 25082 alexanderj@earth1.net October 31, 2000 Helen and I are very grateful for your love and prayers. It's our desire that we pray for each other and the leaders of our country. We are celebrating "Thanksgiving" in just a very few days. When thinking of all that God has done for us I am reminded of Psalm 95:2 which declares "Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms." With Christmas just around the corner another year is coming to a close. When we observe this present world's evil condition how easily we see Satan is attacking the family and our churches in every possible way. As we near the year 2001 we believe God's Age of Grace is coming to a close. Let's keep our eyes on Jesus and the work He has called all of us to do. When we hear of all the things our leaders are doing for clubbers we praise the Lord. Helen and I believe it is an outward sign of the inward love they have for boys and girls. With thoughts of our clubs on our mind it is an honor to say thanks for your gift of $50.00. Thank you once again for your prayers and sharing.

... Aesthetic Software is the freelance software development operation run by myself, Jim Alexander. My goal is to help people build Web-based and desktop applications for business, education and entertainment. My resume can be found here The popularity of building applications in Java has greatly reduced development time and implementation complexity. Even more importantly, it is much more pleasant to maintain a system built in Java is than it is to work through the "traditional" snarl of CGI written in perl, C and C++. Small systems can be built quickly in CGI technologies but CGI does not scale with the size and feature set of a given Web site. The performance offered by C and C++ will continue to have its place in speeding up some system bottlenecks but, more and more, Java is appearing in place of these languages. The most recent performance numbers (from Sun and others) indicate that JDK 1.3 is only about 1/2 as fast as C - which is a reasonable price to pay, given the advantages of building on top of the Java platform. Engineers, executives and financiers have grown to accept that Java offers the best environment to build systems within a marketplace that is preoccupied withlaunch dates and engineering costs.

FIFTH GENERATION
James Alexander (Jim) TEMPLE was born on 5 Dec 1841 in Montgomery Co., AL. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Pennington, Bradley, AR. He served in the military in 1861/62. Served as a private in Company D, 9th Regiment of Arkansas Infantry. Discharged after receiving a serious injury when he fell from his horse. His wife filed for and received a pension 24 Oct 1933. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Washington, Bradley, AR. He died on 29 Oct 1895 in Lubbock, Lubbock, TX. Confusion exists as to whether he had a third wife, named Mary. Mary shows up in the 1870 census married to James. Her age is given as 22, and her birthplace is Georgia. James also shows as Georgia, so the information may be incorrect. In any case, Mary at 22 would only be marginally suited to be the mother of the two elder children ascribed to Sarah (Sally) King. It does not seem likely that the Mary in 1870 is confused with Sarah (Sally) King, and must therefore be a third wife. It seems possible, therefore, that the third child, Sallie, born in Mar-Apr 1870, was the daughter of Mary. The first child, known as Mila, appears safely ascribed to Sarah (Sally) King. That leaves in question the mother of John. For John's birth, Mary would have been 19, but it seems more likely that the mother was Sarah (Sally ) King, and raises the possibility that she died in childbirth with him.
In the 1870 census, moreover, there is a housekeeper named Mila Nixon, ae 50, from Georgia. This must be the source of the name of the first child. The relationship with the Nixon family is not clear.

JIMMIE "JIM" BUFORD ALEXANDER AND CORA ALICE SHORE
(See picture Jimmie "Jim" Buford Alexander was born April 20, 1881, in Christiana, Rutherford County, Tennessee. His father, John William Alexander, was born September 28, 1837, in Marshall County, Tennessee and served in the Civil War from April, 1861 to 1865 and died July 20, 1925. He fought in the battles of Manassas, Virginia; Battle of Shiloh; Perryville, Kentucky; Richmond, Kentucky; and was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga where he was captured and imprisoned from 1864 until he was released at the end of the war in the spring of 1865. He married on September 4, 1865. Jim Alexander’s mother, Martha Diadema Clemmons, was born February 29, 1837, in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. She died when Jim was two years old on October 2, 1883. His father never remarried. Jim met Cora Alice Shore at a party and, as she said, they kept company for about a year and married when she was sixteen on December 10, 1905. Alice was married to Jim and had three children when she and her two oldest children, Bill and Loretta, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Watt, Limestone County, Texas. She was baptized by Elders Thomas K. Gunnell and Alonzo Hamberlin. In 1918, the Alexander family visited Kelsey, Upshur County, Texas, where many people of the same faith had settled. They liked the people and the community so much that they bought a farm and moved there in the fall of 1918. Jim was baptized August
