March 20, 2000 COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Oregon State (13-10 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) will play at Portland on Wednesday at 2 p.m., then return home to meet Cal State-Northridge in a four-game series Friday through Sunday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Oregon State placed second in the tournament behind champion Central Michigan. Four Beavers were named to the all-tournament team: pitcher Mark Newell, catcher Bryan Ingram, second baseman Stephen Copeland and third baseman Tim Dryden. Despite playing the entire tournament without injured starting shortstop Will Hudson and losing starting infielder Brian Barden in the opening game, the Beavers finished the Continental Express Classic with a 3-3 record. "We had two routes we could go," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "One was to lay down and say we've got guys hurt and we can't play - we've got every excuse in the world. We told the kids today they'd find out what kind of character they've got, and it turned out they've got a lot." "At this point, it was fun to go out and relax and show I can still bang the ball around a little bit," said Atwood, who batted around .300 last season at NAIA Albertson College while playing the infield in addition to pitching. And his part in a relay play from centerfielder Jackson Coleman to Atwood to catcher Bryan Ingram cut off the Aggies' momentum after OSU had taken a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Japanese homer mark? Call A-Cab September 12, 2002 Print It TOKYO Last season it was Tuffy. This year it's A-Cab who's taking aim at the Japanese single-season home run record. Alex Cabrera, a former major leaguer who's now an infielder for the Seibu Lions, hit his 50th homer Tuesday, becoming the seventh player in Japanese baseball history to reach the milestone. The record is 55, set by Yomiuri slugger Sadaharu Oh in 1964 and tied by former Boston Red Sox outfielder Tuffy Rhodes last season. Cabrera hit No. 50 in his 117th game, faster than either Oh or Rhodes. Cabrera is on pace to hit 59. "I have a lot of respect for Oh's record," Cabrera told the Sankei Sports newspaper after Tuesday's game. "If I break the record, I'll tip my hat to him." With 22 games to go, Cabrera isn't a lock to hit 56. Last season, Rhodes appeared to be on his way to the record, tying the mark on Sept. 24 with five games to go. But he didn't homer again. One of the games was against the Daiei Hawks, whose manager is Oh, and Rhodes wasn't given anything to hit in four at-bats. Oh might have a say in Cabrera's chase as well. The Hawks have four more games against the Lions, and Oh is notoriously protective of his record.

Bonds hits milestone homer mark in record time
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday August 11, 2001 5:03 PM Updated: Sunday August 12, 2001 4:20 AM Bonds has already surpassed his career high for homers, set last season. AP CHICAGO (AP) Barry Bonds hit his career-high 50th home run Saturday, reaching the mark faster than any player in major league history. No. 50 was a three-run shot off the Chicago Cubs ' Joe Borowski in the second inning. The line drive to center just cleared the top of the wall, and Bonds had to wait at second until an umpire made the home run signal. Bonds, ahead of Mark McGwire's pace when he hit 70 in 1998, reached his 50th in the San Francisco Giants ' 117th game. Sammy Sosa was previously the fastest to 50, doing it in 121 games in 1999. Bonds, who hit 49 homers last season, now has 544 for his career four behind Mike Schmidt for eighth place.

Braves win, pass club homer mark
By Bill Zack
Chattanooga Times Correspondent MIAMI There's a sense of urgency here and it has nothing to do with the playoffs. If the Atlanta Braves had been given a choice, they would have played a double-header Tuesday night, then headed for the airport and higher ground. With Hurricane Georges bearing down on the Florida Keys, the Braves kept one eye on the Weather Channel and the other on the Marlins and it was hard to tell which one drew more interest. Thanks to Eddie Perez's bat and an unlikely stolen base, the Braves moved a step closer to clinching the home-field advantage in the playoffs. Atlanta's backup catcher hit an historic home run and stole the first base of his career as the Braves slipped past the Marlins, 4-1, before a crowd of 23,355 at Pro Player Stadium. In his final start, Kevin Millwood appeared ready for the playoffs by pitching five strong innings for his 17th victory. He departed with a 2-1 lead, having allowed six hits while striking out five. It was the last three in Atlanta's lineup who produced a 2-0 lead for Millwood.

Gnats' Hafner reaches 25 homer mark By Jim Thomas
Savannah Morning News
Travis Hafner set two goals at the beginning of the 1999 South Atlantic League season to hit 25 home runs and drive in 100 runs. The Savannah Sand Gnats slugger accomplished the former and pulled within four RBIs of the latter Saturday night, hitting a solo homer in a 3-0 victory over the Hagerstown Suns at Grayson Stadium. "It's definitely a good number to get to," Hafner said after becoming just the eighth player in Savannah history to reach the 25-homer mark. "Maybe now I can shoot for 30." With only 15 games left, that may be out of reach. But his first-inning blast to right-center Saturday made Hafner just the third player since 1982 to hit 25 homers, joining Juan Diaz (25) in 1997 and Chris Norton (26) in 1994. Cliff Cook holds the franchise record with 32 homers in 1959. Hafner's homer off Hagerstown starter Scott Cassidy (12-6) also gave the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder 96 RBIs for the season. Only six players in Savannah history have had 100 RBIs with Jack Pierce (103) the last to accomplish that feat in 1972.

September 17, 2002 Now another foreign fence-buster threatens to break the mark shared by Oh and Rhodes. He’s Venezuelan slugger Alex Cabrera, a first baseman known in Japan as "Superman" who is leading the Seibu Lions to an easy Pacific League pennant win. The Diamondbacks signed him before the 2000 season, and he hit 39 home runs in 74 minor league games to earn a callup to Arizona. He got 80 at-bats and hit .263-5-14, and the Diamondbacks sold his contract to Seibu after the season. He lost one sure homer this year when he hit a ball headed for the back wall of the Tokyo Dome, beyond the left-field bleachers and above the lights mounted at the top of the wall, struck the roof and fell to the field for a single. The Mexico City Red Devils came back from the brink of elimination to win the Mexican League championship in seven games over the Mexico Tigers.

Aaron's homer mark not too far for Mac
After hitting career homer No. 500 Thursday, Mark McGwire may be in striking range
ST. LOUIS (AP) Suddenly, 755 homers doesn't seem like such a formidable milestone for Mark McGwire. Having hit his 500th and 501st homers Thursday night, the natural question for McGwire is whether he can reach Hank Aaron's career mark. "It's too far away," McGwire said. "The logical answer if anybody wants to talk about somebody who's going to break the record would be Ken Griffey Jr." Aaron, though, thinks McGwire can do it. "The way he's hitting home runs, he could break the record next year," Aaron said from Three Rivers Stadium, where he watched McGwire's two homers Thursday night on the scoreboard video screen. "He's hitting them in bunches. Seventy home runs? He might hit 80 some year. Whew! That's a lot of home runs." Time is against McGwire. Though he's the fastest man to 500 in history by 314 at-bats more than half a season's worth he'll be 36 on Oct. 1. Heel injuries robbed him of two prime years, when he totaled 18 homers in 1993 and '94.

FREQUENTLY ASKED BASEBALL QUESTIONS
FAQ About Baseball Records What were the circumstances behind Roger Maris, the home run record, Babe Ruth, the asterisk, and Ford Frick? As Maris moved closer to breaking Ruth's single-season homer mark in 1961, AL president Ford Frick (a friend of the Babe's) established that two records must be on the books one for a 154 game season and one for a 162 game season. Maris and the Yankees were playing the first AL season of 162 game length. Though there was much controversy over an "asterisk" being placed by Maris' name in the record books - -an asterisk never existed. Rather, two records were printed, one for each season length. Eventually it was the 61-homer mark that was recognized as the true mark. What is the longest held record in baseball? The 1906 Chicago Cubs won 116 games, and no team has topped that mark in almost 100 years. As far as individual records, in 1880 Tim Keefe posted a 0.86 ERA. No pitcher has posted a better ERA (at least one inning per team game played) since. That record has lasted more than 120 years! In 1879 the Cincinnati Reds Will White set two records that will probably never be broken. White pitched 680 innings and completed 75 games.

Each of these successful Athletics teams are represented in the defensive and offensive all-time roster. Since the staff features six HOFers, it is only fitting that a Cooperstown graduate be their catcher. Mickey Cochrane played nine of his 13 years in Philadelphia. Only three times did he fail to hit.300, with a peak mark of .357 in 1930. A left-handed, line-drive hitter, "Black Mike" consistently drew respect from opposing pitchers, which helped him fashion a .419 career OBP. He finished his career prematurely following a beaning while with the Tigers, but his final batting average was still a lofty .320. Considered by many of his peers to be the best receiver in the AL in the 1910s

NY 212 438 4335 26-Mar-03 The Importance Of A Good Start Nutrition experts have always said that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. It sets the stage for the rest of your day by getting everything started in a higher gear. The same can be said about a baseball season, where the opening month of April turns out to be as important as a good breakfast. Too often, teams that start out slow are quick to say that "it's only April, there's plenty of season left." That might be the case with certain teams that have an abnormal knack to turn it on big time after the All-Star break (see the Oakland A's), but for many, it's just another tired old baseball cliche. A quick glance at last year's season sheds a little light on this. We took a snapshot of the standings on August 29, 2002, a day before the strike deadline. The Red Sox were and in the Wild Card hunt while the Philadelphia Phillies were and virtually out of the postseason. If you were to throw out their April records, however, each team was eight games above .500 since May 1. It was only Boston's torrid start over the first month of the season that kept them on the playoff's radar screen. Over in the highly contested AL West, the Mariners were four-and-a-half games out. They started the season well, and then were 13 games over .500 from May 1. The Angels and A's were 26 and 28 games over .500 respectively. Had the season begun on May 1, the M's would have closer to eight games out.

Padres' eyes not on record books
February 11, 2003 Spring training is just starting, and hope springs eternal, especially in spring training. But the Padres are in for some trouble this year. Here's one sure clue: Entering the season, our callow Friars have virtually nobody shooting for any kind of career milestone. That may not be scientific criteria, but the fact is most teams have somebody shooting for something more than making the team. Remember the giddy days of the Tony Gwynn 3,000-hit countdown, followed by the Rickey Henderson 3K countdown? Rickey's assault on Ty Cobb's runs-scored record? Look around. Barring an earthquake swallowing them whole, several players are going to join the 500 home run club in 2003. Sammy Sosa is one away. Rafael Palmeiro is 10 away. Fred McGriff (now playing for the Dodgers) is 22 short. Ken Griffey Jr., who was nearly modeling Padres pinstripes this year, is 32 away. Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas are within range of 400 homers. Padres nemesis Barry Bonds is intent on overtaking his godfather, Willie Mays, who is third all-time with 660 homers. Bonds needs 47 (about what he gets against the Padres in a good year). On the pitching side, Roger Clemens starts the season gunning for seven victories to get to the coveted 300 mark. Greg Maddux takes the mound within 27 wins of 300. Tom Glavine has 242, Randy Johnson 224. Johnson and Clemens both have good chances of joining Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton as the only pitchers with 4,000 strikeouts.
