Review of The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark
(by Dennis R. MacDonald; Yale University, 2000)
    by
    Richard Carrier
An Incredible Book This is an incredible book that must be read by everyone with an interest in Christianity. MacDonald's shocking thesis is that the Gospel of Mark is a deliberate and conscious anti-epic, an inversion of the Greek "Bible" of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey
Background and Purpose of Mark MacDonald begins by describing what scholars of antiquity take for granted: anyone who learned to write Greek in the ancient world learned from Homer. Homer was the textbook. Students were taught to imitate Homer, even when writing on other subjects, or to rewrite passages of Homer in prose, using different vocabulary. Thus, we can know for certain that the author of Mark's Gospel was thoroughly familiar with the works of Homer and well-trained in recasting Homeric verse into new prose tales. The status of Homer in basic education remained throughout antiquity, despite the fact that popular and intellectual sentiment had been sternly against the ethics and theology of his epics since the age of Classical Greece. Authors from Plato (400 b.c.e) to Plutarch (c. 100 c.e.) sought to resolve this problem by "reinterpreting" Homer as allegory, or by expunging or avoiding offensive passages, neither of which was a perfect solution. For the Latin language, the opportunity was afforded for Virgil to solve this problem by recasting the Homeric epic into Roman form, exhibiting Roman ideals and creating more virtuous heroes and gods. Likewise, borrowing and recasting from Homer is evident in numerous works of fiction, which often had a religious flavor, and were proliferating in the very same period as the Gospels. One prominent example (mentioned but not emphasized by MacDonald) is the

Homer or Not Homer? Mark 4:35-41 in Recent Study by Douglas W. Geyer (Evanston, IL) dgeyer@aol.com From a paper read at the October 14, 2000 meeting of the Chicago Society for Biblical Research.
This year, we have been presented with a new book that generously reviews the Homeric epics and the Gospel of Mark. It's author, Dennis MacDonald, promotes a method to determine the origin of many of the stories in the Gospel of Mark, proposing a hypothesis about why and when these stories were composed in the way they are. His method consists of an examination of Greek epic poetry for the literary origin of the narrative plots and characters in Mark. I will be criticizing his work in this paper, but when all is said and done, I do take the position that comparison of the Gospel of Mark to Homeric materials can indeed produce good results, just not the kind that MacDonald seeks. We should indeed keep Homer in reach and in mind, because it makes for good criticism and interpretation. But, I think that it would be unsatisfying to follow MacDonald for very far down the road he goes, and we do well not to get sidetracked by it. Today I want to outline that road, explore a good example of it from MacDonald, note my disagreements with it, and suggest what might be done differently. MacDonald proposes that the in the aftermath of the Roman siege upon Jerusalem, there was a compelling need to explain why Jesus had not successfully warned Christians to flee before the Roman devastation. In his view, the destruction of Jerusalem is the primary problem addressed in the narrative we now know as the Gospel of Mark.

    Mark Rubin, P.L.C.
Welcome! I’m a lawyer in Tucson, Arizona. I’ve been practicing law for almost twenty years and know a little bit about what clients want: good service, reasonable fees and sound judgment. In my office we emphasize service. Phone calls get returned, deadlines are met and you know what’s going on with your matter. Clients often worry about fees. Legal services cost money and, in many instances, a lot of money. That said, the real issue is value–does the client benefit from the expenditure. I try, always, to focus on that issue and, frankly, succeed in almost every instance. Clients also expect sound judgment from their lawyer. They don’t want an “order taker”; instead, they want a counselor. I provide clients with my best judgment, based on knowledge and experience, even when they may not want to hear me. In the long run, I think it’s the only way to properly represent a client. Please explore my site. I think you’ll like it and find it interesting and informative. Please share your thoughts (and inquire about legal representation at

When I first told a friend that I was working on a book on Homer Laughlin dinnerware, his response was, “Great! But, isn’t that a crowded field?” This is the type of reaction I have gotten from several people over the past year and a half. The Homer Laughlin China Company (HLC) has been in continuous operation for 130 years. They have made millions of pieces of dinnerware using dozens of shapes and thousands of different treatments. The fact of the matter is fifty people could write books on Homer Laughlin. While there would almost certainly be overlap with the most common shapes and patterns, HLC has produced such a volume and diversity of products that each book would be distinct with unique items. No one book (or even a series of books) could ever fully document the wares that have come out of HLC’s doors.
With that said, how is this book different from others? This work will cover a wide range of dates. Most books on HLC cover the “golden age” of dinnerware which lasted from the 1920s until the late 1960s. Many references come to a halt after such shapes as Cavalier, Rhythm and Charm House. There were some interesting shapes that came out of the 1960s/70s era such as Victoria, Orbit, Granada, Hearthside, Challenger, White Dover and a slew of Ironstone shapes. The only problem with these lines is most examples are unmarked. There are thousands of pieces of dinnerware on the open market and many collectors aren’t aware they were made by Homer Laughlin.
