Play review - Mark Homer's 'Boxed'
By Larry Jaffee
LONDON-Of course, EastEnders fans will forever associate their favourite Albert Square characters with the actors who play them. in some cases, it might be difficult to picture them in any other role, especially for us on this side of the Atlantic, who generally don't get see EastEnders alumni in other U.K. telly productions.
Yet most actors have higher aspirations than "a mere soap opera," whether that might be film, stage or Hollywood, and I don't mean to imply that EastEnders is some lower form of drama. For better or worse, it's perceived that way in its native land.
In any case, Mark Homer is best known for his portrayal of "Tony Hills," according to the programme for his play Boxed, staged this past late spring at West London's prestigious fringe theatre Riverside Studios and his first major acting project outside of EastEnders.
In Boxed, Homer plays the former boyfriend named Chris, who abruptly pops in on his ex-girlfriend Suzie (Carolina Giammetta) six months after their relationship ended because he was unfaithful with another woman.
Chris seems to be in a bit better shape than Tony, the sexually confused, young twenty-something who eventually comes to grips with his homosexuality. But Tony's vocal inflections and occasional looks of neediness show up in Chris. Yet you never somehow picture that this is Tony trying to win back Tiffany. No, this is clearly another character, albeit hetero, with his own hangups.

Homer News file photo
The washed-out Sterling Highway bridge spanning Deep Creek is seen in this aerial photo taken during flooding in October that cut off Homer from the rest of the Kenai Peninsula. Storms of the literal and figurative kind were much in the news over the course of the past year. During the second year of the new millennium, the Cosmic Hamlet faced some epic growing pains. Annexation, which some say was long overdue, drew nearly 900 residents into the city's fold, while new buildings and businesses sprouted on almost every corner. New leaders stepped forward at the city and state levels, while the city's manager stepped down. Ultimately, however, it was weather that put all the change in perspective. When floods slashed Homer's roadway connection to the outside world, the growing community became a small town again as residents turned out en force to help save a home, while others rallied to build temporary bridges where old ones were washed out. Stormy times Homer started off the year with the stormy annexation controversy in the forefront of the news. In January, the annexation petition was reviewed by the Alaska Legislature, which took up many of the same complaints annexation opponents have had since the city announced its intent.

Kayaks, veterans mark holiday
As sure as the warm weather, king salmon and greening lawns mark the season, a host of local activities are on tap for area residents and visitors this Memorial Day weekend. A new event this year is what's billed as the first annual Kachemak Bay Kayak Festival organized by the Homer Chamber of Commerce. Kayaking opportunities for most ages and skill levels will be available for people interesting in taking advantage to the sea kayaking in the bay area. Organizers have a coordinated a series of discount lodging, kayak tours and lessons and other events involving local businesses. Among the activities are free tours by True North Kayak from 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Saturday in the protected waters of the Homer Boat Harbor. Two free movies about kayaks and canoes are also planned at Alice's Champagne Palace at 7 p.m. Saturday. Although chamber of commerce director Derotha Ferraro notes that Memorial Day is typically a low-key holiday in the area, with many families opting for fishing or barbecues, "we wanted to give people another opportunity to go kayaking."

The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark , by Dennis R. MacDonald. Published by Yale University Press. Dennis MacDonald's argument is one which is novel and will surely anger biblical traditionalists and literalists: namely, that the gospel of Mark was written as a conscious and deliberate imitation of the stories in the Homeric epics. The goal was to give readers a familiar context to discover the superiority of Christ and Christianity over pagan gods and beliefs. MacDonald sets up his argument by describing what scholars of antiquity already know: that anyone who learned to write Greek in the ancient world learned from Homer. The process of learning was mimesis or imitation, and this practice continued into adult life. Students learned to imitate Homer by rewriting passages of Homer in prose or by using different vocabulary.

Glaus homer ties postseason mark
By Josh Dubow

Associated Press
Anaheim Angels' Troy Glaus hits a solo home run in the sixth inning of Game 1 of the World Series. ANAHEIM, Calif. Once again, two homers by Troy Glaus weren't enough to give the Anaheim Angels a victory.
Glaus hit two solo home runs in Saturday night's World Series opener but Anaheim lost 4-3 to the San Francisco Giants.
''It doesn't matter,'' Glaus said. ''We didn't win tonight. This team, all year long, has been about winning. Unfortunately tonight we ended up on the losing end.'' Glaus, who tied a record by hitting six home runs in a postseason, also connected twice in the first-round opener at Yankee Stadium. But just like in that game, Angels ace Jarrod Washburn gave up three longballs and Anaheim lost taking away from Glaus' big day. Glaus was the only big offensive threat Saturday for an Angels team that batted .328 and averaged more than six runs a game in the first two rounds of the playoffs. But Anaheim also lost the openers in those rounds before sweeping the rest of the games.

In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and "MacDonald shows parallels between Homer and Mark so extensive that a relationship of dependence, conscious or unconscious, must be assumed. This is a radical thesis with great implications for the understanding of the gospels."William Hansen, Indiana University "MacDonald’s conclusionthat the author of the gospel of Mark in many significant places is imitating Homerposes a profound challenge to current scholarship on the history of early Christianity and the historical Jesus."Mary A. Tolbert, Pacific School of Religion Dennis R. MacDonald is John Wesley Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Claremont School of Theology and co-director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity at the Claremont Graduate University. Or rather, this is the most recent stop along the way ( whatever "the way" may be ): I honestly see my "home page" as a direction rather than a destination . Odds are, this isn't going to be the last posted version of my homepage....
