Tommy Rockwell sent him to Memphis to record in 1928 for the Okeh label. He was paid $240 plus expenses, and made eight recordings. That one session sold enough records to earn him a trip to New York City for more. His career seemed to be taking off at that point, but the Depression settled in, sending him home. People simply forgot about him. He returned to Mississippi, and stayed for 35 years where he herded cows and plucked away, perhaps only to them and the passerbys at the Valley Store. It may have been this isolation from the modern blues world that allowed his music to continue to remain true to the pure Delta Blues sound. Unfortunately, it was also this isolation that prevented the folklorists from finding him again. They certainly tried, but to no avail, simply assuming that he had died. One lone blues collector from D.C. heard the song "Avalon Blues", and put two and two together. Hurt was rediscovered by Tom Hoskins in 1963 back down in Carroll County. Hoskins convinced Hurt to come with him to D.C. In just a short time, Mississippi John had achieved national recognition. He had a few recording sessions, and played a good number of festivals, including the now famous Newport Folk Festival in 1964, at age 72. He had three years of additional fame before his death on November 2, 1966 in Grenada, Mississippi.

JH: Well I first decided when I wanted to act very early, I didn't know how to become an actor, as such, nor did I know that it was possible to be a professional actor, but I first decided that I wanted to act when I was nine. And I was at a very bizarre prep school at the time, to say high anglo-Catholic would be a real English understatement. It was so high it was flying. He dropped out of school at the age of nine to begin working as a farmer. In 1902, Hurt picked up the guitar, a $1.50 "Black Annie" his mother bought him. Self-taught, Hurt developed a distinctive three-finger style that bears no resemblance to other area musicians. He also developed proficiency with the harmonica but was always a self-accompanied musician. Unlike Furry Lewis and Memphis Minnie , Hurt refused an offer to accompany a traveling medicine show, preferring to stay close to home. Hurt played solo at local parties where his fluid yet highly syncopated guitar style made him a favorite among Carroll County dancers. His fame was localized, however; it was not until 1912 that he started playing parties around Jackson, Mississippi, 103 miles from his native Avalon. While Hurt worked mostly outside music as a farmer and laborer, his musical reputation among whites as well as blacks led to his first recording session in Memphis in 1928. Willie T. Narmour and Shell W. Smith, two white country musicians from Carroll County, recommended him to their record producer, Tommy Rockwell.

His ragtime approach was unique for a Mississippi guitarist, but was necessary to adequately support his repertoire which was that of a songster as well as a bluesman. John recorded 13 songs in 1928 then drifted into obscurity until his "rediscovery" in the early 60's.
