In the Snow:
Who's Been Here?
by Lindsey George
Book themes:
This book would work best with a winter or animals theme. Synopsis:
It's a winter morning and two children set out to go sledding. Along the way, they put out some corn for the animals. As they sprinkle the corn, they discover tracks and other evidence that an animal had been there. They look at the clues and try to guess "who's been here?". Some of the animals that they discover are a grouse, an owl, a porcupine, a chipmuck, a mink, and a buck. The story has a cute and very appropriate ending for a cold, winter day. Reading the story:
  • Display the book cover and ask the children to brainstorm what they think the book will be about. Ask "How do you know that?" Rewrite the title of the book on the chalkboard and ask the children about the punctuation. Discuss the author. While reading the story, pause after reading the repetitive question Who's been here? and let the children look at the animal and try to name it. Some answers should be praised if they are a close approximation since the child is using pictoral clues (an important skill for emergent readers). (Ex. If the picture is a grouse , then, answers such as bird, turkey, chicken, hen

GEORGE LINDSEY For years, GEORGE LINDSEY's classic portrayal of Goober has filled our hearts with love and laughter. While he may be best known as the "simple" gas station attendant on The Andy Griffith Show, LINDSEY'S talents extend well beyond the city limits of Mayberry. In fact, LINDSEY is an established veteran character actor of tremendous range. After graduation from the prestigious American Theatre Wing in New York and landing co-starring roles in Broadway musicals including All American and Wonderful Town, the Jasper, Alabama native headed for Hollywood in 1962. He was immediately cast for the film Ensign Pulver directed by Josh Logan. Within the next two years, LINDSEY appeared in over 40 television shows. His introduction to Andy Griffith in 1964 inspired the creation of the Goober character. LINDSEY co-starred on both The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD for more than seven years, firmly endearing himself to an entire nation of viewers. The Andy Griffith Show itself was never out of the Nielsen Top Ten during its original airing on CBS from 1960-68, and was the top-rated show on television during its last season. Now celebrating its 35th anniversary, the show currently airs in more than 100 U.S. markets. The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) is one of the most loyal and active fan clubs today, boasting such illustrious members as country superstar Randy Travis and college favorite REM. Mayberry RFD ran for three seasons (1968-71) and was a Top Ten program while on the air. Obviously, a television viewers' favorite, judging by the syndication popularity, the "Mayberry Fever" still runs ram-pant today supported by a multinational fan club that maintains over 500 chapters.

In an mysterious display of Internet political strategy, millionaire Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes has snapped up 19 domain names labeling Jeb Bush as his potential vice-presidential running mate. See also: Not for Sale: Bushsucks.com More specifically, that's Jeb Bush, brother of leading Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush. "We feel that there will always be room for a Bush on the Forbes ticket it just happens to be Jeb Bush," said Forbes spokesman Kendrick Ashton. Among the domains Forbes registered are www.steveandjeb.com www.forbesandjebbush.net , and www.forbes-jebbush2000.com Forbes campaign officials declined to elaborate why, at this early stage in the presidential race, Forbes would pick a running mate at all, much less his main rival's brother. And, specifically, does it mean that Forbes would name Jeb Bush as his running mate were he to beat the odds and overtake George W. Bush for the GOP nomination?

OCSN Newswire Oct. 4, 2000 Charlottesville, VA Virginia's Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Nazareth Academy) both notched a pair of goals to help the Cavaliers defeat the George Mason Patriots tonight in the first round of the Virginia Soccer Classic. Virginia opened up a 4-0 lead, scoring three times in a 15 minute span in the second half before allowing a late Patriot goal. The Cavaliers attacked early, and in the 10th minute Aly Benitez (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) hit the crossbar but the ball was collected by the Mason keeper. Borski finally put the Hoos on the board with a goal in the 35th minute as she scooped up a missed clear and ran the ball in at the top of the box. Her shot trickled through the arms of the keeper to give Virginia the lead they would not relinquish. The Virginia defense allowed the Patriots only one shot in the first half. Virginia's second goal came as Lindsey converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Laura Gaworecki (Spring, Tex./Klein) sent a cross to the front of the cage and in attempting to play the ball, Erin Englehardt (Hasbrouk Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart) was fouled in the box. Lindsey's kick beat the keeper to the lower right of the cage to put the Hoos up 2-0.

03:15 PM Sep. 10, 1999 PT George W. Bush has concerned privacy advocates by releasing the names of donors and amount of their contributions to his presidential campaign on his Web site. Bush, the current Republican presidential frontrunner, said his decision to disclose the information was an attempt to foster more trust in the campaign finance system.

See also: A Campaign for Privacy "By daily posting an updated list of contributors on my Web site, Americans will be able to look for themselves to find out who is helping to fund my campaign," Bush said in a press release. "What they will find is that their friends and neighbors, grassroots people in every state in this nation, are responding to my message of prosperity with a purpose by sending in $20 or $50 or $100 or a maximum of $1,000 to help elect me president," Bush said. Campaign reform advocates said that Bush's move was a step in the right direction. But they also saw it as an attempt to deflect criticism about his massive campaign chest which, as of 26 August, had reached US$49.2 million.

The Life of George "Goober" Lindsey

(From the University of North Alabama Archives. Used with permission) 1. Background Information for Teachers: George Lindsey was born on December 17, Alabama Statehood Day, in the Tennessee Coal and Iron Hospital in Fairfield, Alabama. When he was six weeks old, he accompanied his family to the town of Jasper, Alabama, where he remained a resident while living in Alabama. Although Lindsey's life appears to be picture perfect, his struggle from a lower class family to stardom is a success story itself. Lindsey's parents were named George Ross Lindsey and Alice Smith Lindsey. His father started out playing baseball for one of the local teams but never made it to the minors. He had several jobs but never succeeded in any of them. His mother was crippled, suffering from a disease known as osteomyelitis , a painful inflammation of the bone marrow. Lindsey was an only child and the only boy to be born in the whole generation on either side of the family. Even though he came from a lower class family, he managed to complete school and continue his education at college. He first enrolled at Walker Junior College in Jasper, Alabama. It was the school's first year to field a football team, and little did Lindsey know that football would be his meal ticket to a college degree. After one semester, Lindsey left and enrolled in Kemper Military School in Booneville, Missouri. He was not so sure that the military was made for him, so after one year, he decided to try Florence State Teachers College, in Florence, Alabama (better known today as the University of North Alabama). There he as able to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, with a specialty in the field of physical education.
