Cole Porter Biography written by JX Bell Cole Porter's name derives from the surnames of his parents, Kate Cole and Sam Porter. Kate's father, James Omar (known as J. O.), was an influential man both in the community and in Cole's early life. J.O. started from humble beginnings as son of a shoemaker, but his business savvy and strong work ethic made him the richest man in Indiana. Despite J.O.'s obsessive drive for making money, he took time off to marry Rachel Henton, who had several children with him. Kate Cole was born in 1862, and was spoiled during her youth (as well as later in life). She always had the best clothes, the best education, and the best training in dancing and music. Her father had every expectation of marrying her off to a man with a strong business background, a strong personality, and the potential for a good career. As it is for many filial presumptions and expectations, Kate married someone who was quite the opposite a shy druggist from their small town of Peru, Indiana. The couple married without the full consent of J.O., but he financially supported their wedding and subsidized the couple. As one of the richest men in Indiana, he thought his daughter should be seen doing and wearing the right things without financial fears. These subsidies from J.O. financed the rest of Sam and Kate's life, as well as that of their son born on June 9th, 1891: Cole Porter.

25. Cole Porter: The Great Sophisticate
Biography of composer and lyricist cole porter, plus analysis of his contributions to the development of American musical comedy.
http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/porter002.html
COLE PORTER: THE GREAT SOPHISTICATE This article was originally published in The Story of America's Musical Theater . David Ewen. New York: Chilton Company, 1961. pp. 134-139. W Most of all he himself is like a character from a novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. All his life Cole Porter was the avid hunter of excitement, adventure, and gaiety; all his life he traveled under the banner of "anything goes". He was the sybarite to whom the good things of life was almost a religion. Provocative in his attitudes, unpredictable in mood and action, irresponsible in behavior, he was truly a living symbol of the decade in which he first achieved maturity as a song writer. America First , described in the program as "a patriotic comic opera," in which Clifton Webb starred as a titled Englishman. America First was produced by Elizabeth Marbury, the same person who had just then scored such a decisive success as a co-producer of the first Princess Theater Show. She could hardly have realized then that in young Cole Porter she had another gilt-edge investment, since America First lasted only 2 weeks.

I've had this idea for a long time: Americans tend to create their most characteristic art when they think they're doing something else. Our dramatic tradition is not the stage as much as the movies. Even there, note that we make movies, rather than "films." That is, John Ford made movies (and Westerns at that), whereas nice boys like the Cohn brothers make films. While Americans have produced great art song in the tradition of Europe, it turns out that the so-called "standards" from the teens through the 40s have a deeper hold not only on the natives' affections, but on much of the rest of the world's as well. I may, for example, admire - or even be moved by - Barber's "Sure on this shining night," but I make some sort of effort to bring it to consciousness. On the other hand, I find myself humming "Our Love Is Here to Stay" or "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Can we even call this "tradition?" None of the music is very old, after all, and we tend to regard it, while the paint is still spanking new, as disposable. Producers, composers, lyricists, and "book" writers for decades looked on the Broadway show (even with such examples as

Porter's witty, sophisticated lyrics and his affecting melodies place him high in the ranks of American composers of popular music. He was an elegant and debonair man, in spite of a riding accident (1937) that left him crippled. He studied music at Harvard and with D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. After one early failure, most of his musicals were vastly successful. They include Greenwich Village Follies Gay Divorce Anything Goes Jubilee Red, Hot and Blue
