    Al Roker Returns to "Today"
    July 10, 2001 By Sheila Dwyer , Knee1 Staff
Today Show weather guy Al Roker returned to work July 9th, a month after undergoing total knee replacement surgery
Roker damaged his left knee in a car accident 15 years ago. The condition of his knee worsened over time and forced him to undergo TKR surgery on Thursday, June 7th.
On his Web site, www.roker.com , he describes his surgery and rehabilitation to the thousands of viewers who visit each month. Roker’s recovery began with a continuous passive motion machine for his left knee. This machine kept his knee in constant motion to prepare it for more strenuous rehabilitation activities.
By the Tuesday following his surgery, Roker was ready to start his official rehabilitation. A therapist helped him bend his knee, which he extended to 80 degrees on the first day—most people can bend their knees 105 to 110 degrees, so Roker realized he had a long road ahead. Along with bending and walking, Roker also learned more mundane skills, such as how to get in and out of the bathtub and the car.
Roker also revealed on his Web site that he is taking the blood-thinning drug Coumadin. Otherwise, he feels great and is prepared to tackle the rest of his physical therapy.

Gods And Generals February 20, 2003

Tomorrow, the Mouth Of The South has a new movie opening up. Ted Turner sunk 90 million of his own cash to produce, "Gods and Generals", starring Jeff Daniels, Stephen Lang and Robert Duvall.
It's a look at the Civil War and to promote it, Warner Brothers staged a Civil War re-enactment in Central Park; a battle between the Confederate forces and the Union soldiers of the 124th NY/NJ division.
At three and a half hours, it's a long haul but a good movie. Two of the stars showed for interviews with me on the Today Show. Hey, here's a movie where you know who wins in the end.

Al Roker has been the weather and feature reporter on NBC News' Today since January 1996. Until January of 2000, Roker also served as the weekday weather forecaster for News Channel 4's early evening newscast Live at 5 on WNBC-TV, NBC's flagship owned and operated station in New York City. "NEW YORK" MAGAZINE has twice named Roker Best Weatherman. He came to WNBC-TV as a weekend weathercaster in December 1983 from WKYC-TV, the NBC Television Station in Cleveland. Roker began his broadcasting career while still in college by landing a job as a weekend weatherman WTVH-TV in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1974. After graduation he moved on to weathercasting jobs in Washington, D.C. (1976-1978) and Cleveland, Ohio (1978-1983). He is a recipient of the American Meteorological Society's prestigious Seal of Approval and has been a pioneer in the use of computer graphics for weathercasting.
Among his interview highlights, Roker conducted an exclusive interview with Peanuts creator Charles Shultz shortly before his death from colon cancer. Since 1985, he has served each holiday season in midtown Manhattan as co-host for the annual Christmas at Rockefeller Center. The seven time Emmy Award winner also co-hosts The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rose Bowl Parade and appears on various specials for NBC.
In 1994, he founded Al Roker Productions, Inc. The company is involved in the development and production of network, cable, home video and public television projects. Two of the most successful projects include the critically acclaimed special on PBS about severe weather, Savage Skies, and a highly rated travel series called, Going Places. His company is also producing a series of specials for The Food Network. Roker is the author of "Don't Make Me Stop This Car! Adventures in Fatherhood," which was released in June 2000.

Comments on Al Roker As we well know, Al Roker, beloved anchor person on TV, had gastric bypass surgery a year ago. He has lost 100 lbs and seems to be doing well with the surgery. That is wonderful to hear. However, I have a few concerns which I will state here: 1. Roker appears to have made the decision, very much influenced by his father's admonition to "lose weight" (even though his father died of the repercussions of smoking, not obesity) and his wife's constant pressure (Deborah Roberts is a TV anchor with a body to kill for, who appears to be somewhat younger than Roker. She has admitted to bothering Roker a lot about what he ate and his weight). Making a commitment to lose weight should be a decision for the individual alone. It is not wise to make such a serious commitment especially to have one's body changed, on the pressure from those around us. Restricting food and portions is difficult. In a person with a gastric bypass, because such major modifications have been made in their body, the first year, they are not really hungry - I believe that this first year is when the body adapts to the plumbing changes - so restricting food is not difficult. But after the first year or so when they are healed up, it becomes a battle royale again. At that time, they face the same issues they faced previously. In some ways "the tool" helps (the pouch fills up etc) but in other ways, the "tool" can cause some disadvantages such as a damaged metabolism from the quick weight loss.

Home Gastric Surgeries Considering WLS? Ask Your Surgeon ... Join Our Family Al Roker's Story Here's The Story! November 4, 2002
    Well, friends, here's the story.

Last March I had a gastric bypass operation. You may know it as "stomach stapling", although it's much more than that. This is something that I had been contemplating for a long, long time. After my Dad died, I decided it was right for me to do.
I had ballooned up to 320lbs. I was unhappy about the way I looked and felt. I knew that I was a heart attack or a stroke waiting to happen. It wasn't "if", it was "when". So after doing much research, I chose Dr. Marina Kurian of Lenox Hill Hospital to perform the surgery.
It was done laproscopically and it went off without a hitch. In the last nine months, many people have speculated and guessed at what I had done to lose the weight.
The National Enquirer had a hospital employee violate my privacy and break several laws in providing them with my surgical and hospital information. Good for them. I'm sure they're proud.
US Weekly magazine stated I had a "Lap-Band" procedure performed. Ebony magazine (Equal Opportunity Sleaze) stated I had the operation and quoted the price. Many radio talk show hosts speculated about it as well. And some of you e-mailed me as well. Some were really upset that I wasn't talking about how I was losing the weight.

June 2, 1999, 11:30 am ET Okay, it's not quite a real Mac sighting, but this is too good to pass. On Letterman's " Top Ten Rejected " list, one of the lists that didn't quite make it into the Top 10 was "Top 10 Cool Things About Being Bill Gates' Baby" was "Fun to watch dad storm out in a huff when you say your first word: 'Macintosh'." (Thanks to Nolan Haims for sending this our way.) Back to more legitimate Mac sightings. The "Today" show has been running a segment on "Dream Jobs," about where you would work if you could have any job. Weatherman Al Roker's "dream job" is working in animation. "We saw him going through all the drawing inking and story boarding at a New York animation house," reports MacCentral reader D. Johnson. "When the time came for editing, a Power Mac 8600 was shown in the background, running the editing software." After the feature, when the anchors were having their discussion about the segment, the chat eventually came around to using the finished cartoon on Al's Web site . Roker said it could be viewed there as a QuickTime movie. "An 8600 and QuickTime in the same morning," Johnson says. "What a way to start the day!"
