One of the greatest screen biographies ever produced, this monumental film runs nearly three hours, won seven Academy Awards, and gave George C. Scott the greatest role of his career. It was released in 1970 when protest against the Vietnam War still raged at home and abroad, and many critics and moviegoers struggled to reconcile current events with the movie's glorification of Gen. George S. Patton as a crazy-brave genius of World War II. How could a movie so huge in scope and so fascinated by its subject be considered an anti-war film? The simple truth is that it's notPatton is less about World War II than about the rise and fall of a man whose life was literally defined by war, and who felt lost and lonely without the grand-scale pursuit of an enemy. George C. Scott embodies his role so fully, so convincingly, that we can't help but be drawn to and fascinated by Patton as a man who is simultaneously bound for hell and glory. The film's opening monologue alone is a masterful display of acting and character analysis, and everything that follows is sheer brilliance on the part of Scott and director Franklin J. Schaffner.

11. My Memories Of George C. Scott, Sgt USMC
george C. "Patton" scott, who died Wednesday of an aneurysm at age 71, and I were good friends and frequent liberty
My Memories of Marine SergeantGeorge C. Scott By Major Bob Morrissey USMC (Ret) September 24, 1999 The author of this memoir is Maj Bob Morrissey, USMC (Ret), who was aMarine Corps combat correspondent and Public Affairs Officer, who was Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen Wallace M. Greene, Jr.'s personal public affairs officer. I asked Mo if it would be OK to forward this to the WWII list because there have been a number of posts re/Scott in recent days. I hope you all approve. BMF George C. "Patton" Scott, who died Wednesday of an aneurysm at age 71, and I were good friends and frequent liberty buddies while serving together as three-stripers at the Washington Marine Barracks from 19461948. George and I were both instructors at the Marine Corps Institute, then an accredited academic correspondence school for Marines. I instructed first-year college journalism, English grammar, and authored a new MCI course in photo journalism. George instructed English literature and Radio Speaking and Writing. Because he marched with the grace of a gazelle, he was designated guidon bearer for the elite Barracks ceremonial company. I marched immediately behind him as company right guide , ever-failing to emulate his awesome ballbearing strides. We marched in rain, snow, and Washington heat in many military funerals at Arlington cemeterysometimes two or three a dayas well as in presidential inaugural parades and other special ceremonial occasions in DC. This was in addition to our regular MCI duties. George found funeral details distasteful to him. He became very depressed when witnessing families and relatives mourning the deaths of their Marines.

A Tribute to George C. Scott (This article was originally written at the time of the actor's death in 1999, and is being updated and expanded in observance of what would have been his 75th birthday on October 18 including a new poll.)
Though George C. Scott's death in September 1999 came as a shock, what was probably more shocking for people who knew him is that the hard-drinking, tough-talking, thoroughly independent actor made it to almost 72 years of age in the first place! I'm sure there were those earlier in his career, at least who thought his liver would give out or that he'd be knifed in a bar fight or shot by an ex-wife long before that. I liked George Campbell Scott from the first time I saw him perform on screen, which I'm pretty sure was in "The Hustler" in 1961, then later on TV in the wonderful but short-lived

article and interview by Paul Riordan page 1 of 5
O ne of the most impressive actors ever to grace the silver screen, George C. Scott thrived during the 1960s and '70s, the last period in American cinema before film acting gave way to reactingto special effects, car crashes, explosions and computer animation. The 1980s and '90s offer less of an opportunity for an actor to whom words were as important as the visuals. In an era when motion picture scenarios have degenerated into incoherent dialogue and inept plotting, too few roles have been available to actors interested in being more than plastic pieces on a cinematic chessboard. Quite simply, most acting parts today (with some exceptions) call more for "movie stars" and "personalities" (or the flavor of the month) than for serious thespians. With his imposing physical presence, his strong, craggy features and raspy, distinctive voice, George C. Scott is simply too large an entity to fit into these small characters. Recently, Mr. Scott kindly and graciously took the time to talk with me about his film career to date.
