We are assembling a tribute page to Bobby. July 10, 1998 What a special time it was when I finally had the honor of speaking with Bobby Troup! Bobby was born in Harrisburg, PA. His family owned the J A Troup Music House stores in Harrisburg and Lancaster. Bobby's father played the piano and music was a big part of his young life. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the Mask & Wig show that has been a tradition of the school since 1881. "Daddy" was written for the play by him in 1941. After graduating from the Pennsylvania Wharton Business School, he enlisted in the Marines. When he was not called for duty right away, he went to New York and worked for Tommy Dorsey as a writer. After the incident at Pearl Harbor, Bobby was sent to Officer Training School in the Marine Corps. He was sent to Saipan as a Captain. and while there, did a lot of thinking about song writing. When he returned, he told his mother that he wanted to try to become a song writer. He bought a 1941 Buick with his first royalty check from his song "Daddy." At that time, New York and California were the places for song writers to be. He said he would give himself two years to make it and headed off to Los Angeles, California, writing half of the song "Route 66" in the car along the way. The song was formally recorded on March 16, 1946. He also noted that a lot of his songs were written while he was in cars. His idol was Nat King Cole, and when he heard Bobby's songs, he loved them. Bobby's songs have been recorded by many artists through the years, including Julie London. The song "Meaning of the Blues" was written for Julie. Along with several others. Bobby also wrote the title song for "Man of the West" which starred Julie London and Gary Cooper in 1958 [which by the way, if you have not seen it is one of Julie's best movies in my opinion]. Bobby has recorded six albums and Julie has done thirty. One of Bobby's favorite movies he enjoyed doing was

Besides being the composer of Route 66 , Bobby composed many other tunes that have gone somewhat unheralded ( Baby Baby All The Time You're Looking At Me ). Probably one that may be of significance to Miles Davis fans was Troup's tune The Meaning Of The Blues from the Miles Ahead album. Troup will be remembered also for his weekly network TV show in the 50's called Stars of Jazz . It was a summer replacement show and the first public network show that aired weekly. It exposed nationally to the USA the talents of Brubeck, Tjader, Shearing, Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, Irene Kral, and at the time, his girlfriend Julie London. His show gave a true identity to the West Coast sound. In the 60's he and his wife, Julie London appeared on the TV series Emergency . Bobby was not an actor. Bobby was a good singer - vastly unrecognized as such. When I was in the service he had a weekly radio show that appeared on AFRTS to us GI's overseas. The show brought creedance to those of us who appreciated the jazz idiom. He further defined the West Coast brand of jazz. He was a singer's musician and composer and will be sadly missed. Today's writing is about the BOBBY TROUP MEMORIAL held yesterday at the Moonlight Tango Cafe in Encino. It was wonderful, memorable, funny and sad. I learned so much more about Bobby that I have to share some of it here with you. I think when we lose a friend, whether it was a personal friend or a person who's work became our friend (like a favorite song does), it gives us pause, not only because of our sudden realization that our friend won't be there at our whim, but makes us also wonder how our own lives have been lived. There is usually much more to a great writer than just their writing. It takes a certain amount of "lifeforce" and "soul" to generate great work artistically, and normally it doesn't start or stop with the art. Bobby's Birthday at the SGA in February 1999 (with Phyllis Osmand and Jack Segal) Bobby was not only a world-class writer (Route 66, Girl Talk, Lemon Twist, The Three Bears, etc.) but an amazing man. He was salty, funny, caring, a great father, a talented actor (MASH, Emergency, etc.) and a bad boy in early years. Stories ranged from missed gigs, to first day meetings on the set of Emergency. Most touching were the stories of Bobby and Julie (London, his beautiful wife.) Many said "BobbyandJulie" as if they were one word, and that was the feeling of their life together.
