Corelli, Arcangelo (1653 - 1713)
The work of the Italian violinist-composer Arcangelo Corelli exercised incalculable influence over the following generation of composers, not least over Handel, who worked briefly with him in Rome in 1707. Corelli was born at Fusignano in 1653 and studied in Bologna, an important musical centre. His later career was chiefly in Rome, where he served the exiled Catholic Queen Christina of Sweden, Cardinal Pamphili and the young Cardinal Ottoboni, in whose palace he lived for a number of years. He died in January 1713 and was buried in the Pantheon, a sign of the respect in which he was held. Instrumental Music Corelli's influence depended largely on his published instrumental music, notably 48 Trio Sonatas for two violins and basso continuo (generally harpsichord and cello), twelve sonatas for violin and continuo and twelve Concerti grossi, works for string orchestra with a solo group of two violins, cello and harpsichord. The Violin Sonatas include a particularly well known set of variations on the popular dance-tune La Follia, a melody used by many composers of the period. Concerto grosso No. 8 is the famous Christmas Concerto, which includes a pastoral movement setting the scene for Christmas, to be played on the night before the festival. Recommended Recordings Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 Nos. 1-6

Biography
Arcangelo Corelli
Composer Italy Born 17 Feb 1653
Died 8 Jan 1713
Corelli, born in Fusignano, worked his way from the back desks of a Rome theatre orchestra to become one of the finest - and richest - composers of his day. (He died in Rome leaving the equivalent of a multi-millionaire with a collection of paintings that included a Brueghel and some Poussins.) In the last few years of the 17th century he had pupils coming from England, his Monday Morning concerts drew audiences from all over Italy, and his published trio sonatas and violin pieces were selling in thousands all over Europe. However, it seems he was quite insular, and most at home in his own music. There are tales of Handel, exasperated by Corelli's ignorance of French style, snatching a violin from him to show how a piece should be played. Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto' is his most familiar piece, and shows that on home ground he was a highly accomplished composer.

Jänner 1713 in Rom.
