    Maurice Manning
    'Ireland's foremost parliamentarian'
Garret FitzGerald To know that people are reading your book is the primary satisfaction for any writer, and so Maurice Manning of the Department of Politics is very happy that the results of seven years of his work has been in the best-seller lists for several weeks. In addition, his biography of James Dillon has also helped to fill a huge gap in the history of an era in Ireland he feels has been largely neglected by scholars. "There’s almost no scholarly work done on the major players, apart from a few biographies of De Valera and a very good biography of Sean Lemass," he notes. "Most of the concentration has been on the war years and neutrality, with nothing very much of the 50s and 60s. So I was covering that era for the first time." Being one of the few people who is both an academic and a member of the Irish parliament, Maurice has a particular interest in Irish parliamentary history, and the project gave him the opportunity to analyse that history through the personality of a man he describes as ‘one of the outstanding parliamentarians of this century’. "He was vivid and colourful, a distinctive and different person who is intrinsically worth writing about, and what I tried to do was create a picture of times as well as his life."

After this Glasgow-born composer stopped playing in Scottish pipe bands and rock groups, he moved to London to study music, acoustics and linguistics. Dillon is now associated with the New Complexity movement of British composers, one that includes Brian Ferneyhough and Michael Finnissy. The complexity of the music is in its intricate rhythmic demands, but it does not disguise a fundamental love for beautiful polyphony, sometimes even a transparency of texture that is always present on some level in Dillon's compositions. On the other extreme are the works in which no attempt is made to temper their ferocity, like helle Nacht and Nine Rivers. A major retrospective of Dillon's compositions took place at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 1995. He has received commissions from the BBC, Ensemble 2E2M, Festival d'Automne a Paris, IRCAM, the International Society for Contemporary Music and Radio France. A large portion of Dillon's output can be organised into enormous cycles or series. He has written an eight part cycle of duos and trios called L'évolution du vol, as well as the nine-part electro-acoustic series known as Nine Rivers (Oceanos). Indeed, the work we are to hear receiving its European première tonight is intended to be the first in a cycle of twelve pieces. Obituary: James Dillon Jr. / Goal was to serve in military Sunday, March 16, 2003 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette James Dillon Jr., a Marine private from Grove City in Mercer County, apparently shot and killed himself Thursday in Kuwait. He was 19. During his last two years at Grove City Area High School, Mr. Dillon made it plain to everyone that his career goal was to serve in the military. "I never heard him talk about doing anything else. He was going to go into the Marines," said Patty Wilson, who was his high school guidance counselor. Mr. Dillon graduated in spring 2002 and was inducted soon after. He was with the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which is following that unit as the United States prepares for a war with Iraq, reported that Mr. Dillon took his own life outside his tent. Grief-stricken Marines held a memorial service for Mr. Dillon at the new U.S. military base closest to the Iraqi border.

Finance Council Member Profile: Jim Dillon, resident of Calistoga and active parishioner at St. Helena's Parish for the past five years, heads the Development Committee of the Diocesan Finance Council. Retired since 1994, Jim spent thirty-four years as an investment banker, most recently with the Swiss Bank Corporation of New York. His career began in 1956 when he entered the U.S. Air Force following graduation from Amherst College. Returning four years later to Buffalo, New York with Sue, the high school sweetheart he had married will still at Amherst and with their family, now numbering four children Jim began work as an Account Executive with Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. Soon after his return home, he was approached by a persuasive Irish Catholic friend about helping with the corporate gifts division of catholic Charities. Over the years he became a leader in diocesan giving campaigns, eventually serving as Advisory Board Member at the Daughters of Charity Hospital and then at the ripe age of thirty-eight as Chairman of the Board at Rosary Hill College in Amherst NY. (Under Jim's leadership, the school later changed its name to Daemen College.) Jim is no stranger to internal conflicts. His early tenure at Daemen coincided with the campus unrest of the '60s when, as Chairman of the Student Affairs Committee of the Board, he was required to negotiate with irate activists who wished their grievances dealt with, promptly.

If it weren't for a bundle of letters handed down from one generation to the next, Martha Dillon, James Eads' first wife would remain a total mystery. She left little else behind just one solitary portrait photograph of a sultry-looking woman with large eyes and enigmatic smile, and some love poems she wrote for her husband that were published in a local paper. It is the hundreds of letters, long and intimate, between James and Martha, that tell the story of a marriage and paint a picture of a couple. The portrait of Martha that gradually emerges is of a lively young woman, madly in love with her husband, who grows increasingly weary, lonely and sad as she plays second best to his career. Martha Dillon was born in 1821, the daughter of a wealthy member of St. Louis' elite, Colonel Patrick Dillon. Her mother died when Martha was young, and the Colonel remarried a younger woman, Eliza Eads, who was James Eads' first cousin. James probably first noticed Martha at the Dillon home during 1844. By this time, 24-year-old James was already known as Captain Eads. He commanded one salvage boat and was beginning to establish a profitable business retrieving sunken cargo from the Mississippi River. The smart and beautiful 23-year-old Martha turned his head. After several months of courtship, James asked Martha to marry him. She would only agree with her father's approval: "Without his consent I must never be to you more than a friend." Colonel Dillon wouldn't hear of a union between his daughter and James Eads. In a letter to Martha, James reported the Colonel's response: "I am an ambitious man," Colonel Dillon said, "and am anxious to unite my daughter to some one of the families of the highest standing in the country."

    RELATED
Back to the main story James Dillon As creator of two premieres on the Contemporary Music Ensemble's program, Scottish composer James Dillon will spend eight days at Oberlin working as a composer-in-residence with the ensemble. "Dillon's 'the soadie waste' is very complicated and extremely virtuosic," says Associate Professor of Conducting Timothy Weiss, director of the CME. "The kids have done well in dealing, struggling, coping with, and realizing the complexity of the piece." This world premiere came to fruition by virtue of Dillon's acquaintance with Oberlin student Michael Gallope '03. After making the acquaintance of the composer in Boston, Gallope commissioned the piece from him, and then turned the project over to the CME. "...Once Upon A Time," Dillon's second piece on the Wednesday program, shares the same instrumentation as that of Edgard Varèse's "Octandre," which was played by the CME last semester. "It's not often that you find two contemporary pieces with the exact same instrumentation," says Weiss. "...Once Upon A Time" is scored for piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, and string bass. This will be the work's American premiere.
