After planting rice for two years during the Cultural Revolution, he worked in a Beijing opera troupe. At 20 Tan was admitted to the Central Conservatory in Beijing, and he eventually attained his doctorate in composition at Columbia University, New York City in 1986, the city where he is now based. He has become famous for his opera Marco Polo , commissioned by the Edinburgh Festival and premiered in 1996 at the Munich Biennale. His work has already been the subject of various film documentaries by Finnish, Danish and British television authorities. Recently appointed as the Resident Composer and Conductor with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Tan has also performed with the London Sinfonietta, London Philharmonic, the LA Philharmonic, the Orchestre Nationale de France among others. His awards include the 1993 Suntory Prize Commission from the late Toru Takemitsu and the 1996 City of Toronto-Glenn Gould International Protege Award. (Adapted from CD sleeve notes.) Too long has "classical music" been a creative domain of the West. Even if a Chinese composer such as Tan Dun must to some extent utilize elements of Western music, so to speak, it has been overdue for Asia (and not just the Chinese) to make a mark in terms of contemporary compositions. We should not forget that many instruments in the Western orchestra are derived from the East - the

"What is very little heard in Europe or Western music is the presence of sound as the voice of nature. So that we are led to hear in our music human beings talking only to themselves. It is clear in the music of Tan Dun that sounds are central to the nature in which we live but to which we have not long listened. Tan Dun's music is one we need as the East and the West come together as our one home."

Since the release of his opera Marco Polo, Ghost Opera ; his Symphony 1997 was commissioned to mark the political transfer of Hong Kong, and his schedule is reportedly well-booked through to the year 2005. But a common complaint about his recorded works has been that they lose something in translation Ghost Opera, Marco Polo, and Symphony 1997 are highly conceptual and very theatrical, and though they make for some exciting and thought-provoking listening, one can't help escape the feeling that a certain visual element is missing; that actually witnessing the performance would add so much more. But with the Ondine release of

Posted December 7, 2002 Next week The Dessoff Choirs (Kent Tritle, Music Director) will be featured in the New York premiere of Tan Dun’s Water Passion after St. Matthew , one of the hottest tickets in this year’s Next Wave Festival at BAM. Commissioned by Helmuth Rilling and Stuttgart’s Internationale Bachakademie Passion 2000 Festival to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death, the choral and instrumental performance piece had its U.S. premiere in Oregon this past July. Tan, the Grawemeyer Award-winning composer best known for his Academy Award-winning score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , will conduct. In this “mesmerizingly beautiful” (The Times, U.K.) work, Tan re-imagines the Passion as a multicultural amalgam of musical traditions, natural sounds, percussion, and song. While Dessoff is no stranger to cutting-edge performances, having sung in the North American premiere of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 5

Q-Review
Composer Tan Dun is most recognized for his award winning operas and symphonic compositions. He was selected to compose an international mosaic of music to celebrate and bring in the year 2000: 2000 Today: A World Symphony for the Millennium. His opera, Marco Polo garnered him the prestigious Grawemeyer award. Tan Dun is no newbie to film music as he has the thriller Fallen already under his belt. For this martial-arts film; however, he goes a much more traditional Eastern route, as opposed to the jazz influences exhibited in Fallen . Featured in this score are the incomparable cello talents of Yo-Yo Ma, who was, of course, featured in John Williams score for Seven Years in Tibet . Also, featured is CoCo Lee who brings her vocal talents in both English and Chinese to the romantic pop tune, A Love Before Time (14, 15).

I'm not quite sure what made Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon such a huge success. It's not that I think it's bad (I've not seen it myself, but others have said it's superb), but simply that a film in Mandarin Chinese with many colloquial film making factors make it an unlikely box office success. Its cerebral take on the action movie format also seems at odds with current trends - although in fairness, most of the trends are what the studios think we want to see rather than what we actually want to see. I suspect that former Bond girl Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat ( Anna and the Kind ) helped a lot, plus the factor of acclaimed director Ang Lee who has directed several successful, but wildly different films including the superb period drama Sense and Sensibility and the offbeat civil war picture Ride with the Devil . Of course an American studio is more likely to promote a film by a director with something of a Hollywood track record, even if the film is in Mandarin Chinese. Choosing Tan Dun as composer was perhaps not a terribly surprising choice, but an excellent one; Ang Lee's choices for composers have seemed eminently suitable for the film, there are few who could have written as delightful a score Doyle's

Aube: Stared Gleam Kronos Quartet: Tan Dun: Ghost Opera I've been single for a while now, after spending a number of years in two more-or-less contiguous relationships, and while I sometimes cling to the diffident fiction that my tastes in art depend on abstract parameters with which my romantic state does not interact, it doesn't take much effort to demonstrate that my art life and my romantic life are both derived from my life , and thus inevitably share some timbres and colors, some oblique tropes and similarly choreographed tautologies, and at times even some characters. It's constantly tempting to try to integrate causality into the equations: how many of my reactions to books and movies and albums are to some extent products of my isolation? Or, the other way around, is my laborious search for truth in part a complicated avoidance mechanism designed to protect me from dangerous relationship vulnerabilities? Or have I finally just bought so many books and CDs that they've developed a collective will, and are secretly warding off women so they can have me to themselves? you . How can your most mundane, circumscribed actions convey something of your personality and soul? How will you cross a street, or look in a window, or surreptitiously peruse the "adult" video section in such a way that a passerby could imagine, in your smallest gesture, a life the two of you might share?

The 250 th anniversary of Bach's death was marked by the appearance of newly commissioned Passion settings by Osvaldo Golijov, Wolfgang Rihm, and Tan Dun. I'm not sure what Bach would have made of the latter's eclectic, Asian-influenced Water Passion after Saint Matthew . For his part, given his upbringing and musical education in Communist China, Tan Dun didn't hear Bach's music until the late 1970s, when he was twenty. As the title suggests, water plays an important visual and musical role in this work. Seventeen large transparent bowls of water, dramatically lit from below, form a cross on the stage. The water is needed to play some of the percussion instruments; Tan Dun has scored the Passion for what he calls a "Water-Instruments-Orchestra." For the composer, water is "a metaphor for the unity of the eternal and the external, as well as a symbol of baptism, renewal, recreation, and resurrection." The sound of water appropriately begins and closes the Passion. Water Passion is beautiful and spare, as one would expect, given the work's antecedents. On other hand, the crowd scenes, what Bach might have called the
