Edward German (1862-1936)
Edward German (originally Edward German Jones) was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire, in 1862, where, in his teens, he organised a local band and taught himself the violin. In 1880 he went to the Royal Academy to study the organ and the violin. After leaving the Academy in 1878 he was briefly an orchestral violinist before being employed as musical director at the Globe Theatre. He composed highly popular incidental music for plays, including "Richard III" (1889), "Henry VIII" (1892), "Nell Gwynn" (1900), and others. He also wrote symphonies, orchestral suites, symphonic poems, etc., of which his "Welsh Rhapsody" (1904) is best known. After Sullivan's death in 1901, German was commissioned to complete his unfinished opera "The Emerald Isle", and he also wrote his own operetta "Merrie England" (1902), to be followed by other operettas ("A Princess of Kensington" (1903), "Tom Jones" (1907), "Fallen Fairies" (1909)). He thus came to be regarded as Sullivan's legitimate successor. His music is generally characterised by lightness and grace rather than depth. He was knighted in 1928, and died in London in 1936.

    German, Edward (1862 - 1936)
Edward German, knighted in 1928 for his services to music, was the successor of Sir Arthur Sullivan in the field of English operetta. A composer of some versatility, he wrote little after 1910, feeling out of sympathy with the new age in music, which by then had dawned. Operettas The patriotic comic opera Merrie England was staged at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1902. The stirring Yeomen of England vies in popularity with an aria for Queen Elisabeth I of England, O peaceful England, while I my watch am keeping. Recommended Recordings Piano Works

These are late Victorian pieces and the titles reminded me of many pieces that I played as a boy with these simple titles such as Melody and Reverie While some listeners will waste time in trying to find influences of Chopin and Mendelssohn in these pieces they would do far better to simply listen to and enjoy them. The opening Valse Fantastique lives up to its name and is played with scintillating finger work. The

"Let them (the British musical public) have muck. It’s all they care for". "Muck", is according to the speaker, light music; the speaker is Edward German (1862-1936), born Edward German Jones in Whitchurch, the son of an organist and choirmaster. "Muck" or not, German produced a number of light music masterpieces and when Elgar said to him that he admired his music, we can be reasonably certain that it was to the light side of his output that Elgar was alluding. German of course had plenty of serious music credentials, with study At the Royal Academy of Music (his composition teacher there was Ebenezer Prout). He was, soon after, composing major pieces, a Te Deum (1887) and a Symphony in E Minor (1887, premiered 1890), soon followed by a Second, in A Minor, subtitled Norwich as it was first performed in the East Anglian city in 1893, then a symphonic poem
