Learning German with a Tutor (1929-1931)
STRONG: Now we've come to my shortage of German. I didn't see how I could enroll in a course in German, what with the work on the dissertation and carrying a fulltime teaching load at City College. The only answer was to arrange for tutorial instruction. Thanks to Mrs. Overstreet, I began to study German in the evening under Francesca von Strecker, who was a teacher of German in a girls' school in New York City. She wanted to start me out, quite reasonably, on a beginning German text. I said, "No, what I need to acquire is philosophical vocabulary, and the beginning text will not help me at all. Why don't I start with a philosophical work in German and learn the necessary grammar and structure, the conjugation of verbs, and so on, by reading German philosophy?" She said she'd never heard of learning German that way, but she was willing to help me try it out. So we selected two texts. One was Schopenhauer

Archive - Ambassador's Interviews Live Radio Interview BBC-Four, 24.01.2001 Edward Sturton, BBC, and Dr Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz, German Ambassador to London, on Minister Fischer's visit to London The German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, one of Europe's most committed federalists, is in London. He is picking up an award from the German British Forum, and as is customary on such occasions he'll make a speech. It seems that's got everyone in a twitter. Reports suggest that the Government has tried to persuade him not to frighten the horses with his Euro enthusiasm. The German Ambassador Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz is in our radio car.
Q: Good morning Ambassador. A: Good morning Q: How heavily have you been leant on over this speech? A: I think we should be realistic. Both Foreign Offices are saying that they are not aware of any interventions about which the papers are writing such a lot. Neither am I. Q: So, there has been absolutely no contact at all suggesting that Mr Fischer might be wise or at least hope for to tone down his Euro enthusiasm? A: I would not be worth my money if I did not report on the situation in Britain. And there are so many contacts between officials and the Government all the time. So we are fully aware of the situation in this country.

22 January 1915
Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Sir Edward Grey
To me the crux of the situation has been Belgium. If England or France had acted toward, Belgium as Germany has acted I should have opposed them, exactly as I now oppose Germany. I have emphatically approved your action as a model for what should be done by those who believe that treaties should be observed in good faith and that there is such a thing as international morality. I take this position as an American; who is no more an Englishman than he is a German, who endeavors loyally to serve the interest of his own country, but who also endeavors to do what he can for justice and decency as regards mankind at large and who therefore feels obliged to judge all other nations by their conduct on any given occasion. I do not think you need to have me show a precedent for writing you; but, if you do, I shall ask you to turn to young Trevelyan's "Life of John Bright," pages 314 to 316. Bright was writing to Sumner at the time, when the bulk of the leading English politicians, from Palmerston and Derby to Gladstone and the editor of "The Times," were more or less openly hostile to the cause of the American Union and the freeing of the slaves. Bright's letters were written to Sumner in order that they could be read aloud by Lincoln to his Cabinet, which was actually done. He was afraid the United States would drift into war with England. His letters run in part as follows; "You know that I write to you with as much earnest wish for your national welfare as if I were a native and resident of your country. I need not tell you, who are much better acquainted with modern history than I am, that nations drift into wars. I fervently hope that you may act firmly and courteously (towards England). Any moderate course you may take will meet with great support here. I have no doubt you will be able to produce strong cases from English practice in support of your actions, but I doubt if any number of these will change opinion here. You must put the matter in such a shape as to save your honor and to put our Government in the wrong if they refuse your propositions.

Sir Edward Grey's Indecisiveness
British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey to British Ambassador to France, Sir Francis Bertie. Sir Edward Grey to Sir F. Bertie Foreign Office, July 31, 1914 Sir, M. Cambon referred today to a telegram that had been shown to Sir Arthur Nicolson this morning from the French Ambassador in Berlin saying that it was the uncertainty with regard to whether we would intervene which was the encouraging element in Berlin, and that, if we would only declare definitely on the side of Russia and France, it would decide the German attitude in favor of peace. I said that it was quite wrong to suppose that we had left Germany under the impression that we would not intervene. I had refused overtures to promise that we should remain neutral. I had not only definitely declined to say that we would remain neutral; I had even gone so far this morning as to say to the German Ambassador that, if France and Germany became involved in war, we should be drawn into it. That, of course, was not the same thing as taking an engagement to France, and I told M. Cambon of it only to show that we had not left Germany under the impression that we would stand aside. M. Cambon then asked for my reply to what he had said yesterday.

EDWARD MACDOWELL
A merica's first internationally recognized composer, Edward MacDowell was born into a Quaker family of Scottish descent on December 18, 1861. APPROACHING STORM by E.H. Bannister. As a child he studied piano before going abroad in 1876 to Paris, then on to Germany, where he found a sympathetic spiritual home. Like his compatriots Paine, Chadwick Griffes , and Farwell , who also made the German pilgrimage. MacDowell immersed himself in not only advanced counterpoint and harmony, but also in the entire Romantic ethos. Imbibing from the stream of German folklore, poring over the great Romantic writers from Goethe and Schiller to Heine, Geibel, and Lenau
Listen to "In The Woods" in the Songbook For the next eighteen years MacDowell built a career as a respected teacher and composer. His symphonic music resonates with poetical suggestion, often uses programmatic titles to evoke moods, and displays an affinity for folk-based elements, among them an interest in Native American melody. The forty-two solo songs with which he endowed the repertoire demonstrate a passion not only for the German Romantics, but also for the texts of his Scots precursor Robert Burns and for the English and French Romantics. In 1895 MacDowell founded an artistic colony in Peterborough, NH, which remains today a mecca for artists seeking a stimulating and reflective environment for creative work. Edward Titchmarsh was known as Ted to his contemporaries. His grandfather was a grocer in Royston while Ted's father, Edward Harper, became a Congregational minister in Newbury, Berkshire. Ted was the second of three children born to Edward Harper and Caroline Titchmarsh. Ted's father moved to Sheffield, where again he was the Congregational minister and it was in Sheffield that Ted attended King Edward VII School. He later wrote of his time at this school:- The first occasion on which I distinguished myself was when I was in one of the fourth forms. The headmaster for some unknown reason made the whole upper school do an arithmetic paper, the same for all forms. The mathematical specialists in the sixth form came out top, and I came next. ... At this point one had to choose either classical or modern subjects: I was put on the classical side. I learnt enough Latin to pass and enough Greek to fail. it became clear that mathematics was my real subject and I began to specialise in it. In December 1916, when he was seventeen years old, Titchmarsh won an Open Mathematical Scholarship to Balliol College, University of Oxford and he began his studies there in October 1917. By this time, of course, Britain had been involved in World War I for three years and Titchmarsh, by now eighteen years of age, was soon undertaking war service. After just one term at Oxford he joined the Royal Engineers and in August 1918 he was sent to France as a dispatch rider. Titchmarsh was fortunate to have arrived in France at a point when the tide of the war had changed. There had been major offensives by the German armies throughout June and July of 1918 but as Titchmarsh landed in France the Allied forces were making steady advances, driving the German troops out of France.
