German-American Citizens in 1901
Dr. Conrad Diehl C
onrad Diehl, the son of a German immigrant from Wittgenbron, Hessen Kassel, was born in Buffalo in 1843. He was a physician who graduated from UB's Medical School, served at Buffalo General, Deaconess Hospital, the 65th Regiment, the Buffalo Almshouse, and as City Coroner. He was a member, then President, of the Buffalo School Board before he was elected Mayor in 1897, as a Democrat. He was also a member of the Orpheus musical society and the Sangerbund (Singers' Association). As Mayor, Dr. Diehl played an important role in bringing the Pan-American Exposition to Buffalo.
Edward G. Becker Edward G. Becker E dward G. Becker was involved primarily in banking, holding positions with both the German Bank and the Buffalo Savings Bank. He would be appointed secretary of the latter by the bank's board of trustees in 1902. Becker served president of the Buffalo Co-Operative Brewing Company which at the time was one of the largest brewing enterprises in the Eastern United States. He was a member of the Buffalo Club and a life long member of Orpheus.

(My German is poor so please let me know if this is incorrect) The final card is different from the other AHX lobby cards since it lacks the bottom border and includes the credits and a summary in German which reads: Inhalt Gefangen in eniem Netz aus Rassismus und Hass, begeht der junge Derek in seinem Wahn schliesslich einen brutalen Mord. Cloth ISBN 0-7006-1136-3, $45.00 Air raid sirens wail, searchlight beams flash across the sky, and the night is aflame with tracer fire and aerial explosions, as Allied bombers and German anti-aircraft units duel in the thundering darkness. Such "cinematic" scenes, played out with increasing frequency as World War II ground to a close, were more than mere stock material for movie melodramas. As Edward Westermann reveals, they point to a key but largely unappreciated aspect of the German war effort that has yet to get its full due. During the Allied air campaigns against the Third Reich, well over a million tons of bombs were dropped upon the German homeland, killing nearly 300,000 civilians, wounding another 780,000, and destroying more than 3,500,000 industrial and residential structures. Not surprisingly, that aerial Armageddon has inspired countless studies of both the victorious Allied bombing offensive and the ultimately doomed Luftwaffe defense of its own skies. By contrast, flak units have virtually been ignored, despite the fact that they employed more than a million men and women, were responsible for more than half of all Allied aircraft losses, forced Allied bombers to fly far above high-accuracy altitudes, and thus allowed Germany to hold out far longer than it might have otherwise.

The Regiment was under the command of Lt. Col Owen Richards, which was dated at Hallowell, Ontario May 15,1822. It is preserved in the Public Archives of Canada at Ottawa The numbers beside each name is their age at time of service. There are 409 men in this muster roll. Question marks mean "may be spelling error". Many of these men were United Empire Loyalists who fought in the American Revolutionary War. They served in this Regiment along side their sons, brothers and cousins. Note: Harmonius Wanamaker Sr. is my first ancestor to Upper Canada. Many of these surnames are in my family tree. Further Note: This Muster is kind of like a census as well, recording all elligable men of fighting age in that area. Edited by Anna Kemper Hesse
Printed from the Original Glass-Plate Negatives by Oliver A. Schuchard
Erin McCawley Renn, Adolf E. Schroeder, and Oliver A. Schuchard, Contributing Editors
Capturing the day-to-day life of the German-American community of Hermann during the years from 1895 to 1920, Little Germany on the Missouri is an illuminating and fascinating look at Missouri's German heritage. Featuring more than a hundred images taken by Edward J. Kemper, a gifted horticulturist and viticulturist, the book depicts life in Hermann during the height of its cultural and economic achievements. Although Kemper's photographs center around his family, friends, and neighbors, they encompass the "essence of Hermann" through his eloquent visual realization of a golden age of German American culture. The photographs, taken over a twenty-five-year period, record scenes that are now totally lost to us, embodying the inner character of the town and leading the viewer into the life-affirming world Kemper knew and loved. To this world, Kemper brought an affectionate eye, a sense of fun, and pride in his community. Produced from glass-plate negatives and original prints by Oliver Schuchard, the photographs are arranged in three parts: manufacturing and agriculture; the grape and wine industries; and customs and traditions. The images, along with supporting commentary by Anna Hesse and the contributing editors, explore the economic, cultural, and social life of the community, detailing Hermann's traditional German practices as well as the influences of developing American technologies. The contributors conclude that the Kemper photographs provide new evidence pertinent to the understanding of how immigrant groups preserved their culture and new data for reexamining the immigrant experience in the United States.

97. Edward Sapir: Encyclopaedia Of The Social Sciences: Dialect
Dialect. Citation edward Sapir. Similarly, Alsatian, Swabian and SwissGerman are dialects or groups of dialects of a common folk speech.
http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/sapir/Sapir_1931_a.html
Dialect
Citation: Edward Sapir. "Dialect," Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences (New York), 5 (1931): 123-126. Of the large number of dialects spoken in Germany, German Switzerland and Austria, for example, very few, if any, can be considered (124) as modified forms of the culturally accepted Hochdeutsch of literature, the pulpit, the stage and general cultural activity. The dialects of the German speaking folk go back unbrokenly to the Old High German of early mediaeval times, a German which was even then richly differentiated into dialects. The present standardized German of the schools arose comparatively late in the history of German speech as a result of the fixing of one of the Upper Saxon dialects as the recognized medium of official communication within the German speaking dominions. Luther's Bible helped considerably in the diffusion of this form of German as the recognized standard. It has taken a long time, however, for Hochdeutsch to take on a recognized phonetic form and to be looked upon as a well standardized form of oral communication, and to this day a large proportion of Germans, including the educated ranks, are bilingual in the sense that they use the standardized German for formal purposes but employ the local dialect for more familiar uses. Local dialects are in a sense minority languages, but the latter term should be reserved for a completely distinct form of speech that is used, by a minority nationality living within the political framework of a nation. An example of such a minority language would be the Basque of southwestern France and northern Spain or the Breton of Brittany. These languages are not dialects of French and Spanish but historically distinct languages that have come to occupy culturally secondary positions.
