Leopold Godowsky, Jr.
Leopold Godowsky, Jr. (1900-1983), the co-inventor of color film, was an accomplished professional violinist who played with many prominent symphony orchestras. Early in his career, he performed jointly with his father, Leopold Godowsky, one of the greatest pianists and composers of the early twentieth century. This strong family connection to the arts continued when Leopold Jr. married Frances Gershwin, sister of George and Ira Gershwin, a fine vocalist in her own right, who later became a recognized painter and sculptor. Leopold Godowsky, Jr. and co-inventor Leopold Mannes (1899-1964) discovered common interests in both music and photography while in high school. As teenagers, they set out to "make perfect motion pictures in natural colors," probably unaware that many well -known scientists had been searching unsuccessfully for a practical color photography process for more than half a century. While continuing their musical pursuits, the two collaborated on color film experiments throughout college. In 1929, Lewis Strauss (later to become the chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) helped finance the two researchers. The following year, Dr. C.E. Kenneth Mees, founder of the Kodak Research Laboratories, brought Godowsky and Mannes to Rochester, set them up in a lab, and placed experimental scientists at their disposal in order to accelerate their research. In 1935, Kodak released Kodachrome 16mm movie film, and one year later Kodachrome 35mm still film was introduced. The Godowsky and Mannes Archives are currently held in the collection of Thurman F. Naylor, Chestnut Hill, MA.

Leopold GODOWSKY Studies on Chopin's Etudes (complete)
Marc-Andre Hamelin (piano)
HYPERION CDA67411/2 (2 CDs) [153' 02"] In order to fully appreciate what Godowsky has done it is important to know the Chopin originals (some of the greatest piano music). However, even if you are not familiar with Chopin's inspired creations as he wrote them, Godowsky's commentaries on them retain (to a greater or lesser extent) Chopin's melodies - each can be appreciated on purely musical terms as a Chopin/Godowsky collaboration. And there are some real gems here to complement what Chopin left us. That this is so is due to Hamelin. Whatever difficulties the pianist faces (and they are considerable), Hamelin has overcome them and is able to play each of Godowsky's Studies as a musical entity. It says much for Chopin's genius - and Godowsky's imagination - that it was possible, for example, for Godowsky to write seven Studies based on Chopin's Op.10/5. Each has a different character but Chopin's original is omnipresent: it's like viewing the same object from various angles and seeing a different (but related) perspective. Hyperion's booklet is a model of how to present music that isn't heavily represented in the catalogue or, in this case, only known to piano cognoscenti. Godowsky's own introduction is included along with an essay by Jeremy Nicholas (an author on Godowsky) and comments by Hamelin himself. Add the top-notch production values of Andrew Keener and superb Tony Faulkner sound and this release cannot be faulted. I did wonder though if Hyperion has missed a trick by not adding a third CD and asking Hamelin to record Chopin's 27 Etudes as well - a complete package.

This Lithuanian pianist of Polish-Jewish origin is counted as one of the greatest self-taught artists in music history. Although Godowsky’s parents did little to encourage his musical ambitions, he was hailed as a wunderkind at the age of nine. Apart from three thoroughly frustrating months at the Berlin Musikhochschule in 1884, Godowsky’s only "studies" were his three years with Camille Saint-Saëns from 1887 to 1890. Despite his ignorance of the classroom, he was appointed to various professorships in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Berlin between 1890 and 1909. Finally, in 1909, Godowsky took over Ferruccio Busoni’s master class for piano at the Akademie der Tonkunst in Vienna. By this time he had established himself as a world-class concert pianist with extended tours of North America and Europe. He had taken US citizenship in 1891, and on the outbreak of the First World War he settled in the United States and did not resume his international concert schedule till 1918. While recording Chopin’s Nocturnes in 1930 Godowsky suffered a partial paralysis of his right hand, which brought his career as a pianist to an abrupt end and confined his artistic activity to composing.
Sound Clips
Though Leopold Godowsky was always admired during his concert career for his consummate musicianship and technical brilliance, he was also celebrated as a "pianist’s pianist," revealing his mastery even more in private than in the concert hall and reducing pianist colleagues and friends to awed silence with the beauty and virtuosity of his playing. A contemporary recalls: "No musician was more capable of constantly gathering around him creative companions in so many fields of artistic work […].
