    Biography
The prolific composer George Friedrich Handel had an early affinity for music, but he was not always encouraged in that direction by his barber-surgeon father. When he was seven years old, his father took him to visit his older stepbrother at the court of Saxe-Weissenfels. The Duke noticed Handel's enthusiasm for the chapel organ, and persuaded his father to let him study music. His first teacher was Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau, organist of the Halle Cathedral. Handel took quickly to his studies, and by age twelve, he himself was assistant organist of the Cathedral. However, in 1702, according to the wishes of his dying father, Handel left his music for law school. This career choice was short lived, however; within a year, Handel dropped out. In 1706 Handel left for Italy to pursue his love of music. There he met many great musicians, including Archangelo Corelli and both Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti. This was at the time when Italian Baroque opera reached its zenith in popularity and success. These associations, with both the musical idioms of the day and these great composers, greatly influenced Handel's compositional style.

Do you find you can only listen to period performances after you have heard them? I agree that period instruments are the best. But great performances are possible on non-period instruments as well. Real trouble comes when you mix period and non-period instruments. I have a Bach Brandenburg set in which a single harpsichord and two recorders are pitted against a full modern string section; the poor keyboard is utterly swamped, and the recorders are barely heard! Thus, my feeling is that, if you can't get a whole orchestra of period instruments, don't use any, even a harpsichord. And at least try to get the right style! I agree with you about vibrato vs. ornamentation: Most Handel performances need much less vibrato and much more ornamentation. The Academy of Ancient Music's otherwise magnificent performance suffers from lack of "graces". I wonder if they've done more recent, less restrained recordings?

Handel is among the greatest composers, and dare I say the greatest choral composer who ever lived. He never experienced a lapse in popularity from the day he died. His work was performed, copied, emulated and admired by such names as Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Gluck. His Messiah is one of the greatest oratorios ever composed. George Frederich Handel
The son of a barber-surgeon, George Friederich Handel was playing the violin, harpsichord, oboe and organ by the age of eleven. At first he practised music clandestinely, but his father was encouraged to allow him to study and he became a pupil of Zachow, the principal organist in Halle.
When he was 17, Handel was appointed organist of the Calvinist Cathedral but a year later he left for Hamburg. There he played the violin and harpsichord in the opera house where his Almira was given at the beginning of 1705, soon followed by his Nero. The next year he accepted an invitation to Italy where he spent more than three years in Florence, Rome, Naples and Venice. Upon his return to Germany, Handel became Kapellmeister to the Elector Georg of Hanover. Unhappy with his duties there, Handel made a trip , later in 1710, to London where Italian opera was becoming popular. He produced an opera to great acclaim in London and, having tasted success, reluctantly returned to Germany. A potentially embarrassing situation arose for the composer when Queen Anne died in 1714 and was succeeded by King George I the very George of Hanover to whose court Handel had never returned! But relations between the two remained amicable. Handel's royal stipend was doubled before too long and he was also granted a stipend from the Princess of Wales.

Detailed Information about Introduction (born Halle (Germany), 23 February 1685; died London, 14 April 1759). Almira was given at the beginning of 1705, soon followed by his Nero . The next year he accepted an invitation to Italy, where he spent more than three years, in Florence, Rome, Naples and Venice. He had operas or other dramatic works given in all these cities (oratorios in Rome, including La resurrezione ) and, writing many Italian cantatas , perfected his technique in setting Italian words for the human voice. In Rome he also composed some Latin church music. He left Italy early in 1710 and went to Hanover, where he was appointed Kapellmeister to the elector. But he at once took leave to take up an invitation to London, where his opera Rinaldo was produced early in 1711. Back in Hanover, he applied for a second leave and returned to London in autumn 1712. Four more operas followed in 1712-15, with mixed success; he also wrote music for the church and for court and was awarded a royal pension. In 1716 he may have visited Germany (where possibly he set Brockes's Passion text); it was probably the next year that he wrote the Water Music to serenade George I at a river-party on the Thames. In 1717 he entered the service of the Earl of Carnarvon (soon to be Duke of Chandos) at Edgware, near London, where he wrote 11 anthems and two dramatic works, the evergreen

When adversity threatened to destroy the life of George Frederic Handel, he came face to face with God. During those sacred three weeks in 1741, the Messiah was born. It still comes to life each December when Calvary Temple in Winnipeg performs a dramatized version before an audience of 10,000. "And the glory, the glory of the Lord, shall be revealed." Thus starts the first chorus, my favorite, of the world's best known oratorio, George Frederic Handel's "Messiah." I cannot count the number of times that I have sung it, but I will never get tired of it. I know all four parts by memory, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, yet I am as thrilled to sing it the hundredth time as I was the first. Great music lifts the heart and turns our spirit heavenward. Remarkably, a German composer, Georg Friedrich Händel, came to write the most heavenly music in the English language. I am going to publish the story behind this unusual occurrence on my
