NATIONAL
Libs blame Hanson, Howard for defeat
By David Reardon in Perth The Labor Party has surged to power in Western Australia on the back of One Nation preferences in a rout which saw more than half of the State's Liberal MPs lose their seats. After eight years in power, five Court government ministers were defeated as Dr Geoff Gallop's ALP gained at least 13 seats. Outgoing premier Mr Richard Court said the Coalition had "no hope" after an unexpectedly strong vote for One Nation. Ms Pauline Hanson's party polled between 10 and 20 per cent of the vote in many electorates and directed preferences against almost all sitting members in retaliation for being put last on Liberal and Labor how-to-vote cards. "With the preferences directed largely against our sitting members, it's been bang-bang, you're gone," Mr Court said during his concession speech. Mr Court, who is tipped to step down as Liberal leader this week, took full responsibility for the decision to put One Nation last. One Nation failed to take a Lower House seat but will share the balance of power in the Upper House after winning at least two and possibly three spots.

NATIONAL
Policy theft will cost you, Hanson warns Howard
Putting sitting Coalition members last on her preference list ... Pauline Hanson poses with two admirers in Surfers Paradise yesterday. Photo: Angela Wylie By Linda Doherty One Nation's leader, Pauline Hanson, has accused the Prime Minister of stealing her policies and will punish the Coalition by putting sitting members last when directing preferences at the poll. The lately elusive Ms Hanson, who is running for the Senate in Queensland, is about to hit the campaign trail to disprove critics who say One Nation has withered on the electoral vine. The bounceback to the Government after Mr Howard's handling of the boat people issue has seen the so-called Howard's battlers drift back to the Coalition from One Nation and Labor. Ms Hanson's refusal to back a "blank cheque" for Australian military support to back up United States retaliation for the terrorist attacks has also caused a backlash among her supporters. [an error occurred while processing this directive] But One Nation's Queensland director, Morrie Marsden, says claims of One Nation's death are premature.

7th May 1998 The Multilateral Agreement on Investment which has so incensed Australians with the destructive effects it would have on business, employment and our sovereignty and the growing awareness among many Australians that while this treaty has not yet been signed, there are many others already wreaking havoc behind the scenes in Australia. These are just examples of the John Howard agenda of free trade and free reign for the multinationals to fund his campaign. John Howard can only deliver more of the same. Ever since the Fraser government he has been a part of the problem not the solution, and even the one time he listened to Australians, and voiced concerns over immigration, he failed that commitment and again deserted the truth. Statement issued by Pauline Hanson MP, member for Oxley

Hanson "Howard has Amnesia!"
8th May
"For John Howard to say of me, "I haven't heard her articulate one intelligent alternative policy", makes it clear he is either suffering from amnesia or just simply a hypocrite. The next election by most accounts will not take place for 12 - 18 months and yet Mr Howard hasn't heard any of my policies. Has he forgotten he only announced his own policies a few weeks before the last election? The people of Australia know my aims and well and truly before the next election, they will know my specific policies to resolve the mess our so-called leaders have given us. Consultation, in the meantime, is my Number One Policy and that was made clear in my news release of 22nd April 1997 . I have also made clear that One Nation will pursue the policy of exporting criminals, not importing them and this was evident in my news release of 6th May 1997 Further to Mr Howard's forgetful or hypocritical nature, perhaps he should read his own news release, "Immigration and One Australia" issued 11/8/88. in particular I draw apon Howard's quote, "My argument with Multiculturalism is not that it respects and tolerates diversity, but rather in many ways it emphasises division and above all, we'll get Australia working again."
