Mateship and Meritocacy:
Conflicting Visions of the Fair Go
McKenzie Wark
There was something slightly incongruous about John Howard appearing on the TV news in a casual shirt, casual pants and bush hat. Even more odd he held a stubbie of Melbourne Bitter in his hand, high enough so you could see it even in the close up. While a reporter questioned him, Howard raised the bottle, yes the *bottle*, to his lips for a swig.
Whatever Howard actually said in this interview about Pauline Hanson, and it wasn't much, matters far less than the image. It looked a little too carefully staged to be anything but a pitch for Hanson's forgotten people. Howard posing as a bloke who would give his mates a fair go, in anticipation of the inevitable 60 Minutes feature on Hanson, in which she looked perfectly cast as the fish lady from up the street.
The 'fair go' is supposed to be the defining idea of a distinctly Australian social life. But increasingly, two competing ideas about what's fair and who gets a go of it battle it out from one public issue, and public image, to the next.
The old idea of a fair go comes from the legends of the bush. Everyone looks out for his mates, and everyone who is a mate deserves a go. Becoming a mate involves an initiation, proving that you are 'one of us' that you share the values of mateship. Its a mildly levelling ethos, which takes a dim view of inherited wealth and privilege, sneers at the over-educated and is disrespectful of authority mostly behind its back.

Symphony No. 2 The Romantic

Mormon Youth Chorus and Orchestra/Howard Hanson
Rec Mormon Tabernacle, Utah, 1972 CITADEL CTD 88110 Hanson's representation on disc is pretty comprehensive. The CD age has smiled benignly on his music. His own recordings of the first four of the seven symphonies were in circulation on LP (Mercury) and in fact No. 5 was available on a rare Eastman Rochester Archive (ERA) vinyl disc during the 1970s and 1980s. The Mercury vinyl discs were put onto CD and are still available. They have a stern gritty impact all their own as does the masterful Lament of Beowulf . These are supplemented by Delos's splendid series conducted by Gerard Schwarz completed before that company ran out of sponsorship. The Schwarz cycle is available on two midprice 'twofers'. How do the present recordings stack up? In terms of sound they are of staggering fidelity. The analogue tapes are of considerable aural depth and realism no doubt brought out to good effect by the 20 bit digital transfer. The sense of occasion and of atmosphere is almost tangible. There is some audience noise but the usual countervailing advantage applies in the intensity of the music making. The stand-out champion here is the Song of Democracy which easily outstrips the previous commercial recording from Hanson himself. The slightly sentimental American patriotic text is sung with burnished conviction and with a clarity of diction that leaves other, more venerated, choirs in the shadows. For such a large body of voices to enunciate with such precision, clarity and feeling is a major achievement. The conviction of the singers speaks of a more innocent age - although it

Biography: Howard Hanson HOWARD HANSON (b. Wahoo NE, October 28, 1896 - d. Rochester NY, February 26, 1981), in addition to being one of America's most widely performed composers for many years, was an extremely influential music educator and a prominent conductor who tireless advocacy of American music helped to nurture the careers of many composers. Although deeply influenced and inspired by the music and culture of his Scandinavian heritage, his music is very much American as evinced by such works as Song of Democracy (1957) for Chorus and Orchestra, and the opera Merry Mount (1933), based on a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which premiered at the Metropolitan Opera. Hanson's most significant contribution to American repertoire is his oeuvre of seven symphonies (the 4th was awarded the second-ever Pulitzer Prize for Prize in 1944), which rank among the best and most-widely appreciated American works in the genre. Born to a family of Swedish Lutherans in a small town that still boasts his origins on a large road sign, Hanson studied at Wahoo's Luther College before further pursuing his musical studies at the Institute of Musical Art (later to become the Juilliard School) and Northwestern University, where he received his B.A. in 1916. He then taught at the College of the Pacific in California, becoming Dean of the Conservatory of Fine Arts in 1919. Winning the first American Prix de Rome's in 1920 enabled him to study with the great Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. In 1924, Hanson was appointed director of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester NY, a position he held until 1964. At Eastman, he expanded the curriculum, enhanced the faculty, developed its performing ensembles and offered the premieres of many works by emerging composers throughout the country. His students included Jack Beeson, Peter Mennin and William Bergsma. He was a frequent public speaker and contributor to various publications and the author of

Howard Hanson News List of Works Biography Discography ... Audio Clips Biography As a composer of choral music, Hanson enriched that repertoire with several of the most popular works for chorus and orchestra by an American composer, including Lament for Beowulf (1926), 3 songs from "Drum Taps" (poetry by Walt Whitman) (1935), The Cherubic Hymn and Song of Democracy (Walt Whitman) (1957). In 1935, Hanson was elected to membership in the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and in 1938, he became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in Sweden. At various times, his concern for the musical education of the young led him to become involved with important national organizations, among them the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Teachers National Association (both of which he served as President) and the Music Educator National Conference. He was also a founder and President for many years of the National Music Council. Hanson's influence as a composer, conductor, educator and administrator is a considerable and abiding testament to his greatness and his importance to every area of American musical life.

1) Table of Contents 2) Why The Dam Was Built
Before Howard A. Hanson Dam was constructed, floodwaters of the Green River periodically spread almost unimpeded across the Green River Valley. Over the past 70 years the Valley has flooded more than 30 times, heavily damaging lands and buildings. People still remember the flood of December 1959 when houses were flooded up to the second floors, and much irreplaceable topsoil was washed into Puget Sound. After a tour of the devastated area, the state's governor was heard to say: "We regard water as one of this state's greatest assets, but I never quite realized until today how terribly destructive it can be." It was not until 1961, when Howard A. Hanson Dam went into operation, that the long and disastrous history of major flooding in the Valley was ended.
Citizens of the area didn't start in 1959 to look for ways to control the Green River - flood control measures had been discussed at least as far back as 1928. Community leaders and citizens eventually organized and, in 1936 at public and Congressional request, the Army Corps of Engineers' Seattle District started a search for the best site for a flood control project on the Green River.
Delayed by World War II, site selection was not made until 1949 when Eagle Gorge was recommended to Congress for a dam and storage reservoir. Six years later, the first funds were made available. Eventually, a total of $37 million was appropriated for the project by Congress, $1.5 million contributed by Washington State, and $500,000 by King County.
