Howard Hanson (1896-1981) was one of the most influential American musicians during his lifetime. He studied in New York City, then at Northwestern, then spent three years in Italy as the first American recipient of the prestigious Prix de Rome fellowship. Returning to the US in 1924, Hanson led a performance of his "First (Nordic) Symphony" in Rochester, New York, and George Eastman hired him to direct the newly endowed Eastman School of Music, where Hanson remained to his death. Hanson was a great supporter or American music and composers, and helped establish the doctoral music degree. His own works including choral, chamber music, organ and piano pieces, symphonies, and opera were in the romantic vein. Got a correction?

A matter of face not race
by Steve Smith. Aurora Australis No. 1. June 1997
For many Thais, the real issue of Australia's recent race debate was not so much the ugly remarks made by Independent MP Pauline Hanson, but John Howard's reluctance to condemn the maverick MP. This move by the Australian Prime Minister, not to give credence to her views by commenting was always a bad strategy and one which was sure to send confusing signals to Australia's Asian neighbours. Following criticism of Hanson in mid-May, the Australian Prime Minister seems to have now changed his tune. Well almost. There is a lingering suspicion that Howard was dragged reluctantly to this decision just as there was a suspicion that his initial reluctance to condemn Hanson was because he wished to garner the latent support of her followers. Howard's response came seven months after Hanson's maiden speech in parliament and really raises questions over his political acumen. All along there has been the suspicion that Howard is playing domestic politics while an international audiences watches with baited breath. In Asia where the importance of "face" and presentation cannot be underestimated, this is just not good enough. What Asian countries wanted, was for Howard's May response to have been last November. To many, Howard's silence may appear to have been a naive misjudgment, a corner he boxed himself into and could not escape. Yet Howard is a politician with over twenty-three years of experience and who surely calculates every political move carefully.

Was Howard right on Hanson?
Michael Duffy, The Courier Mail October 19th 1998 As One Nation recedes in the rear-view mirror of Australian politics it is disturbing to look back at the extraordinary over-reaction to Pauline Hanson by many important and intelligent people. At times it was as if they were seized by a sort of mass hysteria. Why did they lose touch with reality where Hanson was concerned and what does this tell us about our country? The first instinct of many of our leaders and thinkers was to compare Australia to Nazi Germany. As the stolen generation report showed, this is a particular enthusiasm of theirs. When the book Pauline Hanson, The Truth dared to point out (correctly) that some Aborigines in the past indulged in cannibalism, Brisbane Jewish community leader Lawrence Rosenblum told a crowd, "Hitler sought to dehumanise and vilify his victims in preparation for the popular acceptance of their ultimate destruction. His propaganda factories alleged Jewish people mixed the blood of murdered Christians with their Passover bread. Does this sound familiar?" Not really. But Charles Perkins, Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating were among the many who also drew comparisons with Nazi Germany. Family Court chief justice Alistair Nicholson said he was speaking against Hanson because German judges did not oppose Adolf Hitler. Author Tom Keneally announced on British radio that Hanson had put Australia on the train to Auschwitz.

Georg Frideric Handel George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Halle, Germany, in the same year Bach was born. As a young man, he became proficient as a church organist. He studied law at Halle University, but his real interest was in music. Handel composed his first opera, Almira , in 1907. He spent three years in Rome before returning to Hanover as court musician. Handel understood his marketplace. He moved from Germany to London, England, in 1710 to capitalize on the British interest in Italian opera, composing 40 operas over a 30 year period. Public interest started to tire of highly stylized and pompous opera and people sought something new. Suite from "Messiah" In 1737, Handel recognized that oratorios, without sets and costumes, could be performed during Lent, when operas were forbidden, giving him a new source of income while offering new entertainment. He had some success with his early oratorios

Favorite American Symphonies
After many years of being sent by my parents each summer to all-male athletic camps, I finally convinced them, when I was 15, to let me go to the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Turned out I wasn't much better as a musician than I was as an athlete, but, at least there were girls at Interlochen. So I was happy. The National Music Camp, as you might imagine, had rehearsals every day and concerts under the stars every night. But holding hands, never mind necking, was strictly forbidden. So, despite all my efforts to the contrary, I learned more about music that summer than I did about women. Symphonic concerts always began with the Star Spangled Bannerwhich was the one musical composition I learned in elementary school and ended with the Interlochen theme song: an excerpt from Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 ("The Romantic") which I had never heard before. One of the first things I did when I returned from camp that summer was to go out and purchase the recording of Howard Hanson conducting that symphony, performed by the Eastman Rochester Symphony Orchestra. It was then that I first heard the complete work, and it has been my very favorite American symphony ever since. Although everyone who ever went to Interlochen in those days, and since, certainly knew, and probably loved, that romantic melody, most other fans of classical music don't seem to know that it exists. And I don't understand why it isn't as popular as the symphonies of Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky or Dvorak. It certainly is as beautiful and well-crafted.
