Alfred Charles Hill (1915-1992) My father became the most senior designer draughtsman at Park Royal Vehicles. He was responsible for designing the bodywork for many of the PRV versions of AEC's and other manufacturers' chassis. He designed the Routemaster and Bridgemaster (a lower height version of the Routemaster mainly for Sheffield I think). He also designed FRM1 (the prototype Front Entrance Routmaster - of which there should have been three but only one was built). He designed the PRV Atlantean bodywork and went on to design the B15 (renamed the Titan), AEC Renown, Olympian and countless other vehicles for BEA, Tehran, Auckland etc. including the bodywork for the first diesel taxi. Of course, my father was the little known back-room technician who did all the work and received little pay and little glory. He wouldn't have wanted the glory anyway! A short history, as I know it, was that my father was born Alfred Charles Hill in Avalon Road, Fulham 9th February 1915, the youngest of a family of fourteen, none of whom are still living. He entered Park Royal Vehicles in 1928, at the age of 13, starting in the "setting out". Having learned much from his father, who was a cabinet maker, he quickly showed his abilities and became a fine carpenter. However, in 1935 I think, there was an opportunity to transfer to the drawing office and become a member of staff. As he was an already accomplished draughtsman, his application was successful and he remained in the drawing office for the rest of his career; except for a short break at the end of the War (1947 -1949) when he set up a coachbuilding company with some colleagues. Called HBH

Alfred Hill (1870-1960)
Born in Melbourne on the 16th December, 1870, Alfred Francis Hill spent most of his early life in New Zealand. As a child Hill learnt the cornet and violin, playing the former with Martin Simonsen's opera company at the age of nine, and the latter on tour with Charles Harding's Grand Opera Company in 1884. With his brother John, he travelled to Leipzig, where both Hills studied at the Royal Conservatorium of Music between 1887 and 1891. Alfred Hill studied under Gustav Schreck, Hans Sitt and Oscar Paul during this time, and was the winner of the Helbig Prize. He was invited to play second violin with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and as such played under the conductorship of such composers as Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Max Bruch. Hill returned to New Zealand, and worked as a violin teacher, recitalist, chamber musician, and conductor of choirs and orchestras such as the Wellington Orchestral Society. With the Belgian violinist Ovide Musin, he toured New Zealand and travelled to Sydney in March 1897. Hill remained in Sydney, teaching, for a number of years. He continued to conduct ensembles such as the Sydney Liedertafel, and the Great Synagogue Choir, and, on the 1st January, 1901, the Commonwealth Celebrations choir of eleven thousand voices and ten brass bands. From 1902 to 1911 Hill travelled between Australia and New Zealand on a regular basis, writing and conducting opera, in particular. His operas

ALFRED HILL AUSTRALIAN GOLDEN AGE ROMANTIC FOUR COMPACT DISCS FROM MARCO POLO Six Symphonies, Three Quartets and a sprinkling of shorter orchestral genre pieces. INTRODUCTION Alfred Hill (not to be confused with another worthwhile romantic, the American, Edward Burlinghame Hill) was born in Melbourne in 1870 and came from a musical family. From 1887-1891 he studied in Leipzig with Hans Sitt, Gustav Schreck and Hans Paul. He played under the baton of Carl Reinecke at the Gewandhaus where he was also an orchestral player at concerts conducted by Brahms and Tchaikovsky. In 1892 he went to New Zealand to become conductor of the Wellington Choral Society. There he wrote various Maori-themed works including the Maori Symphony (No. 1). From 1896-1902 he was based in Sydney but went to back to NZ in 1906 and 1907 to direct his Maori opera Tapu. From this point forwards he seems to have been predominantly a voice in Australian musical culture although still a presence and visitor to New Zealand. He was extremely active in the production of operas (perhaps we will hear them sometime) and his Waiata Poi sung by Australian singer Peter Dawson became a world-wide hit on 78. His complement of works includes 17 string quartets (mostly dating from the 1930s) and thirteen symphonies (arrangements, largely of the quartets). The symphonies were completed during the period 1941-1960.

JOE HILL (ALFRED HAYES/EARL ROBINSON) (1936)
"Joe Hill" was written in Camp Unity in the summer of 1936 in New York State, for a campfire program celebrating him and his songs Casey Jones Pie in the Sky " and others. Before the end of that summer we were hearing of performances in a New Orleans Labor Council, a San Francisco picket line, and it was taken to Spain by the members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to help in the fight against Franco. It has travelled around the world since like a folk song, been translated into twelve or fifteen languages. Joan Baez' singing of the song at Woodstock brought it to popular attention, but I still get asked the question, "Did you write 'Joe Hill'?" Earl Robinson, liner notes for "Alive and Well," (Aspen Records APN 30101), 1986. Lyrics as recorded by Earl Robinson, Reeves Sound Studios, New York, NY, Jan 8, 1940 (original issue: Timely 503-A);
Bear Family Records BCD 15720 JL, 1996, p. 72.
