Obras:
Bacchus et Ariane, opus 43 (ballet en dos actos-1930) - 2ª Suite
Padmavati (opera ballet-1918)
© eMe

The child was named after his father who died of consumption shortly after his birth. The young widow, Louise, whose maiden name was also Roussel, never recovered from this loss and she died in 1877. Although she lavished love and attention upon her son and he was devoted to her, her broken heart could not be repaired. The boy was brought up by his grandfather, Charles Roussel-Defontaine, who was mayor of Tourcoing. Later, young Albert's aunt married Felix Requillard and Albert was brought up by him, his grandfather having died in 1880 when Albert was eleven. Every year his uncle took young Albert with his family to spend the summer months at Heyst on the Flemish coast. He developed a love for Belgium and claimed Flemish ancestry. Years later, in 1935 he composed his

Roussel's first love wasn't music. It was the sea. Prelude: Adagio As a young adult he follows the love of the sea that had blossomed in him during childhood visits to a sea resort in Belgium. He joins the navy. Scherzo marziale A young naval officer plays a composition for his fellow officers on the ship's piano. A comrade named Calve, the brother of a famous opera singer, is mightily impressed; compliments Roussel and offers to show the composition to a music director. Calve reports that the director feels Albert should devote himself to music. Albert does, resigning his commission at the age of 25. Yet it is a trick; an unsubtle shove in the direction Albert now wants to go. Years later, Calve confesses that he never showed the music to the director. Romanza Chronology

Vivace con furioso His always-fragile health compromised, Albert is invalided out of the army in early 1918. While convalescing, he finally returns to composing Padmavati. Andante grazioso A mature craftsman rises early and exercises first his mind, either by playing his favorite composers, Bach and Chopin, or by tackling a mathematical problem. After that, the morning belongs to composition. If it is summer, the afternoon is devoted to long walks near his beloved sea.

Roussel, Albert 1869-1937, French composer, studied with Vincent D'Indy. His early works show the influence of impressionism. With the symphonic poem (1920) and his Second Symphony (1919-21) he achieved a highly personal style marked by subtlety of melodic inflection, sharp dissonance, and contrapuntal agility. He wrote operas, ballets, four symphonies, chamber and vocal works, and music for piano. Best known are the suites from his ballets The Spider's Feast (1913) and Bacchus and Ariadne
