Rossini Berlioz and especially Liszt Bach Handel and Rameau Mozart and was praised for the purity and grace of his playing. Similarly French characteristics of his conservative musical style - neat proportions, clarity, polished expression, elegant line - reside in his best compositions, the classically orientated sonatas (especially the first each for violin and cello), chamber music (Piano Quartet op.41), symphonies (no.3, the 'Organ' Symphony, 1886) and concertos (no.4 for piano, no.3 for violin). He also wrote 'exotic', descriptive or dramatic works, including four symphonic poems, in a style influenced by Liszt, using thematic transformation, and 13 operas, of which only Samson et Dalila (1877), with its sound structures, clear declamation and strongly appealing scenes, has held the stage. Home Page Die Biographie von Camille Saint-Saëns Französischer Komponist: Mutter und Großtante förderten seine früh zutage tretende musikalische Begabung. Schon mit sechs Jahren komponierte er Lieder und Klavierstücke: sein erstes öffentliches Konzert gab er 1846 in der Salle Pleyel zu Paris, seiner Heimatstadt. 1852 wurde er Organist an der Église Ste. Marie, später an der Madeleine. Es war ein denkwürdiges Jahr für ihn, denn es brachte ihm den Beginn der Freundschaft mit Liszt , der musikalisch nachhaltigen Einfluß auf ihn ausübte. Seine Erste und seine Zweite Symphonie - uraufgeführt 1853 bzw. 1857 - fanden beifällige Aufnahme. Er wurde von 1861-65 Lehrer für Klavier an der École Niedermeyer, u. a. gehörte auch Faurè zu seinen Schülern. Die Langeweile akademischen Lebens trieb ihn zum Theater, doch sollten seine frühen, unter dem Einfluß seines Freundes Auber entstandenen Werke Le Timbre d'Argent (1864-65) und Samson und Dalila (1868) erst 1877 zur Aufführung gelangen. Nach dem Deutsch-Französischen Krieg von 1870 ging er daran, beim französischen Publikum das Interesse für eine nationale Instrumentalmusik wachzurufen und gründete mit Romaine Bussine die Societé Nationale de Musique, in der sich die jungen Komponisten
