Alexander Scriabin
, born January 6,1872- died April 27,1915, was a enigmatic figure sometimes considered the first of the modern composers. Well known authority George Perle said of Scriabin "he was the first to exploit serial procedures systematically as a means of compensating for the loss of traditional tonal functions."
Scriabin was said to have declared to a friend,"It would be terrible to remain nothing more than a composer of sonatas and symphonies." Consequently he planned a major multimedia piece "The Mysterium" that was to incorporate expanded orchestra, chorus, dancers, color keyboard, olfactory keyboard, poetry, utterances and bells suspended from zeppelins. All of this was to be held in a specially built amphitheater in India. It was, he believed, a purification ritual through art for humankind.
Scriabin's Prelude no.6,op.11 is here wonderfully transcribed by Kevin Germain. This work is from Scriabin's first period and it is very Chopinesque. Please notify New Millennium if you have performed it in a program to the public or have recorded it.

Alexander Scriabin
Alexander Scriabin is a composer well-known in Russia but not in the rest of the world. His music is not often performed because much of it is simply too bizarre. Towards the end of his life Scriabin was working on a composition called Mysterium which would have combined music with poetry, colors, smells and lights. He spent most of his time planning out the details, such as were the piece should be played (in a hemispherical tent somewhere in India) and did not record any of the music for it. Scriabin was born on January 6, 1872 in Moscow, and he died in Moscow on April 27, 1915. In his youth he greatly admired Chopin and often slept with a volume of his music under the pillow. Many years later he would tell Arthur Rubinstein that in his youth he was a Chopinist, then he became a Wagnerist, but "now [he] can only be a Scriabinist." Scriabin and Rachmaninoff studied together for many years. At the conservatory they were the stars and won awards for their piano playing. After the conservatory Scriabin toured Europe as a pianist. He made a sensation with his "sensuous, colorful kind of pianism." In 1898, aged just 26, Scriabin became a professor at the Moscow conservatory. The music he wrote until then sounded like

A select Scriabin discography
A personal history with Scriabin
Initially, the composer cast his spell on me with those perfect miniature pieces from his early and middle periods. The great collections of early Scriabin piano music are the Preludes, op. 11, and the Etudes op. 8 and op. 42. This music succeeds uniquely in combining formal perfection with pianistic virtuosity and the most ardent Romanticism - both ecstatic and tragic - that speaks directly to the heart, in an authentic Russian accent. Yes, it is true that this music was highly influenced by Chopin, but how couldn't it be? Chopin was a great inspiration for the whole history of Russian music-making. It isn't quite so popular to point out how heavily the more "canonical" composers Debussy and Ravel were indebted to Liszt's innovative techniques, but in any case these kinds of influences should hardly be used to denigrate any of the spectacular achievements of any of these composers. Certainly I needed to participate in such music much more than just from the perspective of a listener. I wanted to create it from the piano, and I spent many hours in rapt fascination at the keyboard. It all kept me quite busy practicing. For the first time I began to practice regularly, and I haven't stopped to this day! The nature and quality of it have changed, but I still have to remember with some nostalgia the time when I played through the tenth sonata at least once a day for several months in a row! Even after the performance it took me several years to lose the itch to sit down and play through this incredible piece.

Scriabin, Alexander (1872 - 1915)
A friend and fellow-student of Rachmaninov in Moscow, the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin enjoyed a very different and much shorter career, at first as a concert pianist, with the encouragement of Belyayev, who published his earlier compositions. His interest in philosophy and the theosophical theories of Madame Blavatsky influenced the later form of his composition, particularly the larger scale orchestral works, while his later piano music explores new musical territory. His life was vitiated by a growing self-absorption, coupled with eccentricity of beliefs. Orchestral Music Scriabin enjoyed early success with his 1896 Piano Concerto. Of greater significance, however, are the later works, Symphony No. 3 "Le divin poème", Le poème de l'éxtase and Prométhée, Le poème du feu. Recommended Recordings

Piano Music Scriabin's earliest piano music was written while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory, leading to a final series of five sonatas starting in 1911. The remaining seven sonatas cover the years from 1886 until 1907. Other shorter piano pieces include studies, preludes and impromptus, in a style that develops from the influence of Chopin to a sensuous idiom entirely his own.

Alexander Scriabin was born in Moscow. As early 1892, and before completing his piano and composition studies at the Moscow conservatory, he had embarked upon a career as piano virtuoso, which he would pursue practically until his death in 1915. To confine Scriabin's Works and musical personality to existing models proves virtually impossible for several reasons. In a short space of time - 30 years at the most - he had written around a hundred works, of which 74 gave a pre - eminent role to the piano solo. Evolution of style through this prolific output was absolutely staggering. The early works still show the influence of Chopin and Liszt , but upon contact with Wagner his musical language enriched itself to such an extent that there resulted a dissolution of tonality. Although he remained loyal to the piano from 1890 Scriabin turned towards the orchestra.
