Sie hatte zum Ziel, die Künste zumindest teilweise zu vereinigen, z.B. die Musik mit einer der belgeitenden Könste, dem Farbenspiel, wobei diesem, wie zu erwarten ist, keine der Musik gleichrangige Stellung zukommt, sondern lediglich eine untergeordnete. Hintergrund In seinen letzten Jahren, in denen die Skizzen "Vorbereitende Handlung" entstanden, träumte Scriabin von Lichtspielen, die in ihrer Komplexität die LUCE-Stimme, wie er sie für seinen "Prometheus" geschrieben hatte, weit hinter sich ließen. Dies fußte auf den Erfahrungen, die der Komponist mit den Aufführungen der "Prometheus"-Sinfonie mit ihren aus heutiger Sicht recht einfachen Lichtspielen gesammelt hatte. Scriabin verwarf in der Folge das ursprüngliche LUCE-Konzept des "Prometheus" und erweiterte es über die schlichte farbige Illumination des Aufführungsraums hinaus um bewegte Figurierungen und Formen aus farbigem Licht, um der LUCE-Stimme eine zunehmend wichtigere Rolle zuzuweisen.

December 22, 1996 Ruth Laredo, Alexander Scriabin "The Complete Piano Sonatas" (Nonesuch) Detroiter Ruth Laredo established her reputation as a major pianist through her revelatory 1970 recordings of all 10 Scriabin sonatas for the Connoisseur label and her later CBS LPs of Rachmaninoff's solo music. Nonesuch, which licensed the Scriabin material for a three-LP box in 1984, has finally done the right thing by issuing the material on CD. Etudes and miniatures fill out the two-CD set, which at $20 is a terrific bargain, even with the overly bright digital remastering. (The CD sound is still superior to the Nonesuch LPs, though the warmth of the original Connoisseur LPs trumps both.) Scriabin, a mad Russian mystic who fancied himself a messiah, was a genius, one of the 20th Century's most idiosyncratic composers. Influenced by Chopin and Liszt, he created his own dream-like world, a vast universe of feathery textures, hovering melody and harmonic ambiguity that eventually boiled over into a near-anarchy of stacked fourths and extreme chromaticism. It's best to sample Scriabin in large doses: Listen to an early, middle and late sonata in succession a wild journey starting with unique but domesticated music and ending in a swirl of wizardry and de facto atonality.

We are collecting funds for his children, Ariadna, Julian and Marina; perhaps English friends and admirers could do same. His last words, beginning his painful agony were, clenching his hands: "I must be self-possessed, like Englishmen are." His wonderful death testifies to a terrible mystical fight above us in this war.’ His artistic development was comparatively slow, for he was not one of those temperaments that pour forth their best inspirations in early years and soon begin to draw over and over again upon the same sources. Scriabin rarely repeated himself, and never looked back. Each new work of importance was the logical outcome of its predecessor; what might seem merely sketchy or vaguely suggestive in one composition, is generally made clearer, deeper, and more convincing in its successor. Hence that remarkable unity of thought and feeling observable in his whole output, which may be compared to one great continuous poem, of which the individual works are merely episodes.

Alexander Scriabin Alexander Scriabin was born in Moscow. As early 1892, and before completing his piano and composition studies at the Moscow conservatory, he had embarked upon a career as piano virtuoso, which he would pursue practically until his death in 1915. To confine Scriabin's Works and musical personality to existing models proves virtually impossible for several reasons. In a short space of time - 30 years at the most - he had written around a hundred works, of which 74 gave a pre - eminent role to the piano solo. Evolution of style through this prolific output was absolutely staggering. The early works still show the influence of Chopin and Liszt , but upon contact with Wagner his musical language enriched itself to such an extent that there resulted a dissolution of tonality. Although he remained loyal to the piano from 1890 Scriabin turned towards the orchestra. With his Symphonic works the Divine Poem of 1903, the Poem of Ecstasy of 1907, Prometheus or the Poem of Fire of 1910, Scriabin started the building a system of ideas both philosophical and mystical in nature, but which jeopardized his music reaching the general public for a number of years. He was a leading innovator in the field of harmony and rhythm - his last compositions are atonal and frequently contain superposing of rhythms drawn from different periods - but he died before finishing his final work. The libretto for this secular mystery, written by the composer himself, plainly reveals the ultimate goal toward which he was striving: transfiguration of the Cosmos through art. [Adapted from

Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was a Russian composer who started his career composing in the manner of Chopin but who ended up as the great Russain Mystic. It is interesting to note how his harmonic language seamlessly evolved throughout his life from conventional 19th century harmony, through the impressionistic language of Debussy and Ravel, and finally to complete atonality. Among his other writings are his notebook entries and the text of his complete "Poem of Ecstacy" as well as other metaphysical and theosophical texts, like the libretto to an abandonned opera. These are all translated and presented in the Bowers book. I will present here four piano pieces in MIDI form that you can click to play, or download to study. I have simplified them somewhat in a few cases, to make it easier to hear the melodic lines. There is no substitute for hearing a live or well recorded performance of Scriabin's piano music.
