Johann Stamitz Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz was one the most influential figures in European music during the mid-18th century. Born in Nemecky Brod (German: Deutschbrod) in June 1717 and educated in Jihlava and Prague, Stamitz was engaged as a violinist by the Mannheim Court in 1741-42. His professional career took off in Mannheim; in 1743 he was named "Erster Hoff Violinist" (First Court-Violinist); in 1745 or 1746 - the date is uncertain - he was awarded the title Concertmeister and in 1750, was named to the newly-created post of "Instrumental-Music Director". Under Stamitz the foundations of the Mannheim court orchestra’s later fame were laid. He was an inspirational leader and one who introduced a new, revolutionary discipline to orchestral playing. His symphonies, in particularly, were written to exploit the virtuosity of his incomparable orchestra. Johann (Wenzel Anton) Stamitz Composer and violinist. He received his formal education in Jihlava at the Jesuit Gymnasium and was in Prague at the university during 1734-35. He arrived in Mannheim probably by 1741 and was employed by the court. He was "first violinist" by 1743, became Konzertmeister in 1745 or 1746 and director of instrumental music in 1750. In Paris 1754-55, he appeared at the Concert spirituel. His music was published in Paris, London, and Amsterdam. Today Stamitz is regarded as one of the foremost early classical symphonists. His contributions include regular use of the 4-movement cycle (instead of three) in his symphonic works and a transfer of features of Italian opera-overture style, including the crescendo, to the symphony. Under his direction the Mannheim orchestra became one of the most renowned in Europe. He was also well regarded as a teacher; among his pupils who went on to achieve success were his own sons Karl and Anton Christian Cannabich Precise enumeration of Stamitz's works is made difficult by the fact that several other composers shared some form of his surname, as well as by a lack of autograph manuscripts. He is best known for his symphonies, of which nearly 60 are extant (many others are lost), and his ten orchestral trios. He wrote many solo concertos, including at least fifteen for violin, eleven for flute, one for oboe, one for clarinet, and several for keyboard. Other extant works include a Mass, liturgical vocal music, and chamber works.

Stamitz began his career in 1741 as violinist in the orchestra at Mannheim. He soon rose to the rank of concertmaster, and, in 1745, was appointed director of the orchestra. In 1742, he performed as solo violinist at the festivities held in Frankfurt in honour of the coronation of Emperor Karl VII, and created so much enthusiasm for his performance that he attracted the notice of the Elector Palatine Karl Theodore who took him, one year later, to Mannheim as chamber musician. In 1745, Stamitz rose to the rank of concertmaster and conductor of the Mannheim orchestra. It was in this position that he made conductorial history, not only by establishing the Mannheim school of conducting but also by developing his orchestra as one of the most technically perfect of the time. But Stamitz's importance in musical history rests even more with his compositions, in which he proved to be one of the fathers of the symphony, one of the distinguished forerunners of Haydn Stamitz's symphonies enjoyed a great popularity in their day, and as early as 1751 they received performances in Paris.

In seiner Jugend widmete er sich ganz dem Violinspiel, und bei der Kaiserkrönung Karls VII. im Jahre 1742 erregte er durch seine Virtuosität solche Aufmerksamkeit, daß er als Konzertmeister und Kammermusikdirektor an den Mannheimer Hof berufen wurde. Hier machte er sich und seinem Orchester einen unvergänglichen Namen. Abgesehen von kürzeren Reisen nach Paris und Böhmen blieb Stamitz für den Rest seines Lebens in Mannheim. Die Werke von Johann Stamitz Er bereicherte die Orchestrierung um kunstvolle und originelle Effekte (unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Klarinette, damals ein neues Instrument) und um beispiellose dynamische Schattierungen.
