La Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias ha otorgado recientemente el Premio Nobel de Química de este año a:
Alan J. Heeger,
nacido en 1936 en Sioux City, Iowa - USA. Es profesor de física y director del Institute for Polymers and Organic Solids de la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara - USA.
Alan G. MacDiarmid,

QUANTUM EXPERTS WIN NOBEL PRIZES
3 in U.S. Share Physics Award and 2 in the Chemistry Prize
Research on the interaction of atoms and molecules won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry yesterday, and Physics prize was awarded for work involving a bizarre form of electrons. Both awards involved quantum theory and went to scientists working in the United States. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Walter Kohn, 75, of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John A. Pople, 72, of Northwestern University. Dr. Kohn was honored for his work in the 60's on mathematical analysis of bonds between atoms in molecules. Dr. Pople's work involved computer techniques for determining molecular structures. The work is used to predict chemical reactions and in designing molecules for use in medicine and other applications. The physics prize went to Robert B. Laughlin of Stanford University, Horst L. Stormer of Columbia University and Daniel C. Tsui of Princeton University, for describing how electrons behave when they are exposed to extreme cold and strong magnetic fields. Scientists believe the work may eventually help illuminate questions about the structure of the universe. Dr. Stormer, 49, and Dr. Tsui, 59, did their prize-winning work together at Bell Laboratories in 1982. Dr. Laughlin, 47, then their colleague at Bell Labs, described its theoretical underpinnings the next year.

Previous News for January 2003 Next Nobel laureates oppose war against Iraq
29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

The caliber of the graduate students we have had in the Department of Physics at Toronto is perhaps symbolized by the three who have been awarded a Nobel Prize. Below we give a very brief description of these U of T graduates and also give links to their inspiring autobiographies (taken from the Nobel website Walter Kohn . Walter was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in1998. He was cited for his development of the now-famous density functional theory for calculating the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids. This method sidesteps the difficult problem of calculating many particle wavefunctions. Prof. Kohn could have easily won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. He also has done fundamental studies on interacting Fermi systems ( Fermi liquid theory), properties of metal surfaces and the electronic states of impurities in semiconductors. Prof. Kohn was the founding director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Santa Barbara in 1979, probably the leading world centre for workshops in theoretical physics.
Prof. Kohn received his B.A. (Toronto) in Math and Physics in 1945 and his M.A. (Toronto) in Applied Mathematics.

Four Sigma Xi Members Receive 1998 Nobel Prizes
Election to Sigma Xi has been an early milestone in many distinguished careers, the first professional honor many young scientists receive in recognition of their potential to make meaningful contributions to research. Many Sigma Xi members have gone on to win major awards. In the Society's history, more than 175 members have received the Nobel Prize. Four members joined this illustrious group in 1998. 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Robert F. Furchgott and Louis J. Ignarro For their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Robert F. Furchgott , a pharmacologist at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, studied the effect of drugs on blood vessels but often achieved contradictory results. The same drug sometimes caused a contraction and at other times, a dilatation. Furchgott wondered if the variation could depend on whether the surface cells (the endothelium) inside the blood vessels were intact or damaged. In 1980, he demonstrated in an ingenious experiment that acetylcholine dilated blood vessels only if the endothelium was intact. He concluded that blood vessels are dilated because the endothelial cells produce an unknown signal molecule that makes vascular smooth muscle cells relax. He called this signal molecule EDRF, the endothelium-derived relaxing factor, and his findings led to a quest to identify the factor. He was elected to membership in Sigma Xi by the Northwestern University Chapter in 1939.
