A SPLENDID CHAP MEDAL FOR A HUMBLE MAN BY CYNTHIA LEE /UCLA Today Staff A new champion of Westwood, Nobel Prize winner Paul Boyer, returned to a hero’s homecoming, embraced by more than 300 jubilant students, colleagues and coworkers who crowded into the Court of Sciences and later toasted the nation’s newest celebrity scientist with champagne and Dove Bars. Boyer, 79, and his wife of 58 years, Lyda, beamed as applause rippled through the crowd of admirers, ranging from research scientists preeminent for their own work to beginning biology students. Lab-coated graduate students rushed up, asking Boyer to sign their backs. Strangers waited to shake his hand. Boyer, now professor emeritus of biochemistry after 34 years of research and teaching at UCLA, is bringing to UCLA its fifth Nobel Prize in Chemistry; four other Bruins, faculty and alumni, have won the same honor in that field. He shares the medal with John E. Walker of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Cambridge and Jens C. Skou of Denmark for their pioneering work on enzymes essential to the formation of cellular energy that drives all biological reactions. Standing in front of "the house that Paul built," the Molecular Biology Institute that Boyer founded in 1965, Vice Chancellor for Research Kumar Patel, Arnold Berk, current institute director, Provost of Medical Sciences Gerald Levey and Provost of the College of Letters and Science Brian Copenhaver and others praised his genius, his scientific vision and his early recognition of the value of multidisciplinary research.

Chemistry in the News: 1997 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Medicine
Chemistry The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to Paul D. Boyer (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) and John E. Walker (Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK) for elucidation of the mechanism of action of ATP synthase, which catalyzes the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP); and one half to Jens C. Skou (Aarhus University, Denmark) for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na ,K -ATPase. The three laureates have performed pioneering work on enzymes that catalyze reactions of the "high-energy" compound adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP: The Universal Energy Carrier in the Living Cell Adenosine tri phosphate (A T P) consists of adenosine linked to three phosphate groups. On removal of the outermost phosphate group, adenosine di phosphate (A D P) is formed. The energy released can cause other reactions to occur. Conversely, with the help of energy, an inorganic phosphate group can be bound to ADP to form ATP. In one day an adult human at rest converts a quantity of ATP corresponding to about one-half of the body's weight. During hard work the quantity can rise to almost a ton. Most of the ATP synthesis is carried out by the enzyme ATP synthase. At rest, Na ,K -ATPase uses up one third of all ATP formed.

Three share Nobel Prize in chemistry for key process in making medicines
By Malcolm Ritter

The Associated Press Two Americans and a Japanese scientist won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for discoveries now used to manufacture a wide variety of medicines, including antibiotics, heart drugs and a widely used treatment for Parkinson's disease. William S. Knowles of St. Louis and Ryoji Noyori of Nagoya University in Japan shared half of the $943,000 award. K. Barry Sharpless of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., won the other half. They overcame a key problem in making drugs: The molecules of many substances used as drugs come in two forms that are mirror images of each other, just as the left hand mirrors the right. And only one of these forms is helpful, while the other is inactive or even harmful. The three men developed chemical catalysts to produce only the useful form of such molecules. The resulting batches of drug are more potent and lack the side effects that the other form of the molecule would cause. "Many of the medicines we use every day are safer and more effective because of this important chemistry research," said Nina McClelland, chair of the American Chemical Society board of directors.
