III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

The Wilson family bible records Thomas Woodrow Wilson's birth in Staunton, Virginia, "on the 28th December, 1856 at 12 3/4 o'clock at night." Growing up amid the tumult of the Civil War and Reconstruction , Tommy (as he was called) was immersed in the terror and despair of the South in those years. On May 14, 1865, an 8-year-old Wilson watched as captured Confederate president Jefferson Davis was led through town in chains. Though for many, life in the South would never be the same, Wilson, his two older sisters, and a younger brother experienced a comfortable childhood, enjoying the affection of a warm, attentive mother and the instruction of a gregarious yet demanding Presbyterian minister father.

Ellen and Woodrow agreed that to further his political ambitions, he should become a professor. He started graduate study at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he virtually created his own curriculum emphasizing literary-style commentary instead of specialized, primary research. Wilson's first book, Congressional Government, criticized the American model of government in favor of the British parliamentary system. The book's success landed Wilson teaching posts at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, and Wesleyan College in Connecticut. An academic rising star, Wilson returned to Princeton in 1890 to become a professor of jurisprudence and economics at his beloved alma mater. The most popular professor on campus, Wilson lectured on the growing gap between the haves and the have-nots in America in the early 1890s. Captains of industry like the

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia . The twenty-eighth president of the United States, Wilson served two consecutive terms in the White House , from 1913 to 1921. Before entering politics, Wilson taught at Bryn Mawr College and Wesleyan University, and later served as president of Princeton University . At Princeton, he earned a national reputation for his political addresses and articles, which contributed to his election as governor of New Jersey in 1910. Two years later, the Democratic National Convention nominated Wilson to run for president. On the day before Wilson's inauguration in March 1913, members of the Congressional Union, later known as the National Women's Party, organized a suffrage parade in Washington, D.C. to siphon attention away from inaugural events. It is said that when Wilson arrived in town, he found the streets empty of welcoming crowds and was told that everyone was on Pennsylvania Avenue watching the parade.

    Biography

Woodrow Wilson holds a secure place among the great PRESIDENTS of the United States. Few if any chief executives have been more successful in dealing with Congress, which enabled him to win passage of a number of laws that laid the foundations of modern American public policy. Wilson also led the United States in its first important participation in world affairs, during and after World War I. He was, in addition, the man most responsible for the creation of the League of Nations, the parent organization of the present-day United Nations. Wilson's journey to the White House was an unusual one. A teacher and scholar, he served for eight years as president of Princeton University before embarking on a new career in politics. His rise to high office was incredibly swift. In less than three years he won ELECTION first as governor of New Jersey and then as president of the United States. Early Years Thomas Woodrow Wilson (he was called Tommy until his early 20's) was born in Staunton, Virginia, on December 28 or 29, 1856. He always gave December 28 as his birthday, but the Wilson family Bible indicates that he was born at 12:45 A.M. on December 29. His ancestry was Scottish and Scotch-Irish. Wilson's mother, Janet Woodrow, was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. Wilson's father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was also a Presbyterian minister. Although originally from the Midwest, he was a founder and leader of the southern branch of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. Woodrow Wilson's early memories were of Abraham
