21. Philosophers : Hanah Arendt
Very concise biography, covering the key events and interests of her life.

Hanah Arendt
German-American Philosopher and Political Theorist
Descended from wealthy German Jews from Koenigsberg, she was raised by her mother after her father's death from syphilis when Hanah was only 7. Hanah recalled her life as untouched by the strife of world war one, and similarly she remembered no anti-semitism in her early life. By the time she was sixteen she had read "nearly everything." Her main literary interests included Kant, Goethe and Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard's poetry and writings showed her the realms of theology and romantic thought. She matriculated at the univeristy of Marburg in 1924 with thoughts of studying theology, though once there she met Martin Heidegger. She was involved in a turgid affair with the married Heidegger, 17 years her senior, until she learned of his involvement in the National Socialist party. They resumed their relationship after the war in the 1950s, when she returned to europe on frequent visits. Passing up the name philosopher until later in life, Arendt went by the title of political theorist until late in life. She spent much of her life attempting to understand the political and moral causes of the Nazi rise in Germany, and other totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. Her major ideas included the thought that only through "the activity of thinking" could humanity abstain from evil; that thought could condition us from evil deeds like those of the holocaust.

Forschungsleiterin der Conference on Jewish Relations.

Geschichte
Heidegger und Hannah Arendt
Eine Liebesgeschichte
Ettinger, Elzbieta: Hannah Arendt. Martin Heidegger. Eine Geschichte. 139 S., kt., DM 16.90, 1994, Serie Piper 1904, Piper, München.

Online Resources Texts: Hannah Arendt Used Books: Hannah Arendt Know of a Resource? ... Suny Series, Contemporary Continental Philosophy by Jacques Taminiaux Appearing for the first time in English, this book by Jacques Taminiaux is a systematic investigation into Hannah Arendt's intellectual relationship to Heidegger, the implications of which are indispensable to understanding the philosophical choices of our times. Contrary to other recent studies on these two figures, Taminiaux claims "that Arendt's two major works... reveal at every page not at all a dependency upon Heidegger... but rather a constant, and increasingly ironic, debate with him." In the process, Heidegger's philosophical work is interpreted in terms of its own political significance.... Click here to learn more about this book Suny Series, Contemporary Continental Philosophy

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) Political philosopher, an authority on anti-Semitism, and writer of The Human Condition (1958) and Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963). When Arendt's brief love affair with the famous philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) in the 1920s was revealed, it caused much debate. Heidegger joined in the 1930s the Nazi party and was considered one of its ideologist. Arendt, a Jew, gained fame as a German-Jewish refugee scholar. She did not cut his friendship with Heidegger after World War II, although a number of Heidegger's colleagues became disillusioned about his willingness to apologize for his Nazi past. "Love, by its very nature, is unworldly, and it is for this reason that it is not only apolitical but anti-political, perhaps the most powerful of all anti-political human forces." (from The Human Condition Being and Time , which was published in 1927. The young, insecure Arendt has been characterized one-track-mindedly as a "victim" of Heidegger's seduction and moral and political deficiencies. Without doubt Arendt must have realized early that she cannot build her life of their affair. Heidegger was married and had two young children. He had married in 1916 a student of economics, Thea Elfriede Petri, who had attended his classes. It is also far from the truth that Heidegger was some kind of foolish professor, who was drooling after a cold-hearted

    37. Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Politics
An afterword by Martin Jay on hannah arendt and the Meaning of Politics edited by Craig Calhoun and John McGowan.
    http://www.upress.umn.edu/Books/C/calhoun_hannah.html
Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics Craig Calhoun and John McGowan, editors Afterword by Martin Jay Is politics really nothing more than power relations, competing interests and claims for recognition, conflicting assertions of "simple" truths? No thinker has argued more passionately against this narrow view than Hannah Arendt, and no one has more to say to those who bring questions of meaning, identity, value, and transcendence to our impoverished public life. This volume brings leading figures in philosophy, political theory, intellectual history, and literary theory into a dialogue about Arendt's work and its significance for today's fractious identity politics, public ethics, and civic life For each essayon the fate of politics in a postmodern, post-Marxist era; on the connection of nonfoundationalist ethics and epistemology to democracy; on the conditions conducive to a vital public sphere; on the recalcitrant problems of violence and evilthe volume includes extended responses, and a concluding essay by Martin Jay responding to all the others. Ranging from feminism to aesthetics to the discourse of democracy, the essays explore how an encounter with Arendt reconfigures, disrupts, and revitalizes what passes for public debate in our day. Together they forcefully demonstrate the power of Arendt's work as a splendid provocation and a living resource
