Gustav Bergmann studied mathematics, law, and philosophy in his native Vienna and participated in the Vienna Circle discussions of logical positivism . After emigrating to the United States in 1938, Bergmann taught in the Departments of Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Iowa for forty years, where his Philosophy of Science (1957) was the basis for a popular undergraduate course of study. Although he shared many of the substantive convictions of his fellow positivists, Bergmann was more keenly aware than most of the metaphysical commitments presupposed within their ways of thinking. Pursuing methods of philosophical analysis derived from those of Moore , the early Wittgenstein , and Carnap , Bergmann sought to resolve philosophical problems by informally discussing the construction of an "ideal language" whose semantic features would indicate the most fundamental structure of reality. Thus, for Bergmann, the basic question of ontology is: what kinds of things must exist in order for us to devise a formal language in which everything can be perspicuously expressed? The Philosophy of Gustav Bergmann
WILLIAM HEALD From Books at Iowa 56 (April 1987)
Gustav Bergmann was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1906. He received his Ph.D in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1928. Shortly before he received this degree he was invited by Friedrich Waismann to attend a weekly series of meetings of philosophers, scientists, mathematicians and other intellectuals under the guidance of Moritz Schlick, a group that has since become known as the "Vienna Circle" and is generally associated with the philosophical movement known as "'logical positivism". In 1931 Bergmann accompanied Walter Mayer, his dissertation advisor, to Berlin, Germany, where they both worked with Mayer's friend Albert Einstein, assisting him with some of the more complex mathematical aspects of his work in physics. At this time Appointed as a temporary "lecturer" in philosophy in the early 1940s at The University of Iowa, Bergmann was soon made an assistant professor (1944) and by 1950 had become a full professor in both the Philosophy and Psychology departments. In 1967 Bergmann was elected president of the American Philosophical Association and in 1972 became a Carver Professor. Officially retired in 1974, he continued to teach in the Psychology department for two more years and continued to write and do research in philosophy until his death in 1987. As soon as Bergmann had become attached to The University of Iowa he began writing and publishing articles about philosophy. At first, as might have been expected, many of his concerns were with the philosophy of science and scientific method, especially the methodology of psychology. Bergmann's thoroughgoing commitment to the empiricistic methods of the natural sciences coincided exactly with the outlook of the "working" psychologists at The University of Iowa, who believed that the proper method of psychology consisted of observation of behavior and explanation of behavior in terms of stimulus-response mechanisms. Nevertheless, as a philosopher (and not merely a philosopher of science), Bergmann was emphatically not a behaviorist. That is, while he did believe that psychologists must restrict themselves to an examination of the relationships between the value of

Bergmann, Gustav (1906 - 1987) Bergson, Henri-Louis (1859 - 1941) Berkeley, George (1685 - 1753) Berlin, Isaiah (1909) About The Oxford Companion to Philosophy from Oxford University Press Bergmann, Gustav Austrian-born American philosopher, who taught at the University of Iowa for forty years, Bergmann disdained all versions of materialism, though he did defend methodological behaviourism. A member of the Vienna Circle and influenced by Moore, Russell, and Wittgenstein, Bergmann wrote extensively on individuation, universals, and intentionality, often setting out his views by contrasting them with those of others: Meinong, Brentano, Husserl, Quine, Strawson, and so on. As an ideal-language philosopher, Bergmann tried to design a formalism which allows for the analytic-synthetic distinction and the syntactical features of which point to solutions to the ontological problems. Bergmann's most striking contribution emerges in his attempt to show that the truth-bearers of thoughts are mental states which, though simple, have truth-makers that are are complex.

    Synthetic A Priori
    by Gustav Bergmann
Every true sentence represents a truth or fact. This is the broad use of 'fact'. A true sentence is either analytic or synthetic. An analytic sentence represents a formal fact. Upon the narrow use, which I shall follow, only nonformal facts are facts. That is, only synthetic true sentences represent facts. Many philosophers have tried to establish a dichotomy among facts. The traditional labels are synthetic a priori and synthetic a posteriori . The idea is that the truths called a priori are in some sense intermediate between formal truths, which are facts only in the broader sense, and those which are "merely" a posteriori . I shall express this idea by calling the a priori kind or subclass a core of the class of all facts.Which truths belong to this core? Two answers are extreme. One makes a priori truths into formal truths. The other makes all truths or at least all general truths a priori . I dismiss both extremes. The claims that remain still differ; yet they overlap. The several subclasses, each of which some have claimed to be the core, have a common core. I shall attend only to this common core, save words by dropping 'common'.
