Franz Brentano
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Franz Brentano July 16 November 17 ) was an influential figure in both philosophy and psychology . His influence was felt by other figures such as Edmund Husserl and Meinong who followed and adapted Brentano's views. He is best known for his views on intentionality , a concept from scholastic philosophy which he gave a new lease of life (though in fact he never used the word). Intentionality is 'aboutness', the relationship between, for example, a sentence and the real world. Brentano wrote of the "intentional inexistence" of the objects of thought in the mind, which he maintained could not be accounted for by anything physical; a proof, it seemed, of dualism - the existence of a separate spiritual world.

Franz Clemens Brentano (1838-1917)
First Part: The Work
"The first philosophical text through which I worked my way, again and again from 1907 on, was Franz Brentano's dissertation: On the manifold sense of Being in Aristotle"
Martin Heidegger - Preface to : William Richardson - Heidegger. Through phenomenology to thought - Martinus Nijhoff- The Hague, 1963. p. X.
INTRODUCTION
"Brentano was a philosopher and psychologist who taught at the Universities of Würzburg and Vienna. He made significant contributions to almost every branch of philosophy, notably psychology and philosophy of mind, ontology, ethics and the philosophy of language. He also published several books on the history of philosophy, especially Aristotle, and contented that philosophy proceeds in cycles of advance and decline. He is best known for reintroducing the scholastic concept of intentionality into philosophy and proclaiming it as the characteristic mark of the mental. His teachings, especially those on what he called descriptive psychology, influenced the phenomenological movement in the twentieth century, but because of his concern for precise statement and his sensitivity to the dangers of the undisciplined use of philosophical language, his work also bears affinities to analytic philosophy." Dieter Münch, Franz Brentano and phenomenology In: Lester Embree et al . ed., Encyclopedia of Phenomenology Dordrecht: Kluwer 1997, p. 71 b - 75 b FRANZ BRENTANO is generally regarded as the philosopher who reintroduced the concept of intentionality into modern philosophy - a concept later characterized by HUSSERL as the principal subject of phenomenology ( Ideen I: 182). It was BRENTANO who gave HUSSERL the idea that philosophy is a "rigorous science" based on the description of the immediately given. BRENTANO's relation to the phenomenological movement is, however, quite complex and has still to be thoroughly examined. For such an endeavour it is not enough to recognize influences and parallels, one has also to understand that BRENTANO's philosophy is rooted in a cultural background quite different from that of HUSSERL. FRANZ CLEMENS BRENTANO (1838 - 1917) was born into one of the most influential German families of the 19th century: the romantic lyric poet CLEMENS BRENTANO was his uncle and godfather, the politically influential romantic BETTINA VON ARNIM his aunt, the founder of historical jurisprudence and Prussian minister KARL FRIEDRICH VON SAVIGNY his uncle, his brother LUJO was a well-known economist, and his nephew GEORG VON HERTLING (who was to write his doctoral dissertation and habilitation under BRENTANO's guidance) later became president of Bavaria and German Imperial Chancellor. BRENTANO was educated in a rigid Catholic atmosphere.

Brentano's Theory of Judgement
One of Brentano's foremost aims in philosophy was to provide a new foundation for epistemology and logic as two closely related disciplines. He tried to achieve this by a systematic analysis of the mental phenomena involved in attaining knowledge and in drawing inferences. For Brentano knowledge is reached by judgements that are directly or indirectly evident, and logical inferences can contribute to our knowledge because they can make a judgement indirectly evident for us. Hence both epistemology and logic rely on a conception of judgements, how they differ from other mental phenomena, and how they are related to each other. existential (non-predicative), idiogenetic (non-reductionist), and reistic (non-propositional). Today Brentano's theory does not have many adherents. The now dominant view is that propositions or sentences are the objects of belief, and that judgements occur when beliefs are acquired, manifested, or changed. Logical inferences are then defined as relations between propositions or sentences, abstracting from the mental attitudes that go along with them. Although this anti-psychological approach is widely accepted today, there is still an open question concerning the order of explanation here: Are beliefs and judgements true because they are directed at true propositions, or should we say that propositions (and sentences) are true because they express true beliefs and judgements? Once this question is raised, Brentano's theory of judgement remains an interesting alternative to the current mainstream in logic and epistemology.

Brentano, Franz
Franz Brentano (1838-1917), German philosopher and psychologist, taught in the University of Vienna from 1874 to 1894. He is the author of Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (first published in 1874), and is principally remembered for his formulation of the so-called Brentano thesis or doctrine of intentionality, according to which what is characteristic of mental phenomena is their INTENTIONALITY or the "mental inexistence of an object."
