Born: November 7, 1913 in Mondovi, Algeria Died: January 4, 1960 in Villeblerin, France (car accident) Nobel Prize in Literature: 1957 Biography: Albert Camus was a French-Algerian journalist and novelist. He is regarded as one of the primary sources of modern existentialism, and his novels focused on the philosophy that human life is, objectively speaking, meaningless. This results in absurdity which can only be overcome by a commitment to moral integrity and social solidarity. Although not a philosopher in the strictest sense, his philosophy is expressed widely in his novels and he is generally regarded as an existentialist philosopher. Albert Camus: A Life
Unlike his intellectual peers and near contemporaries, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, our knowledge of Albert Camus's life is remarkably scanty. In Sartre and de Beauvoir's case, a seemingly endless stream of full-length biographies, letters and intimate memoirs have re-inforced their intellectual pre-eminence, and ensured their place in the popular imagination as cultural icons. By contrast, most people know only three, somewhat disparate and incongruous, facts about Albert Camus, all of them gleaned from the front end-papers of the Penguin translations of his books: namely, that he played in goal for an Algerian football team, that he was the youngest winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and that he was killed in a car crash in 1960.
Yet Camus's life deserves to be better known, not so much because a knowledge of the life can explain the work, or even make it easier to understand, but rather it gives his ideas a cultural context, and, more importantly, a human image on which to hang them. Such images are vital - it could be argued that the famous picture of Sartre, handing out leaflets during the 1968 student demonstrations, planted him and what he stood for more firmly in the public imagination than his writings ever could.
It is one of the strengths of Olivier Todd's biography, which was published in France last year to overwhelming critical acclaim, that it provides us with the clearest and most comprehensive portrait of Camus to date - at last it has become possible not only to see what Camus was like as a human being, but also to begin to construct an iconic image of Camus that embodies his intellectual and philosophical ideas.

Camus was one of the most important authors and thinkers of the 20th cent. While a student at the Univ. of Algiers, he formed a theater group and adapted, directed, and acted in plays. He became active in social reform and was briefly a member of the Communist party. Shortly after his essay Noces [weddings] appeared (1939), he went to Paris as a journalist. In World War II he joined the French resistance and was principal editor of the underground paper Combat. Noted for his vigorous, concise, and lucid style, Camus soon gained recognition as a major literary figure. His belief that man's condition is absurd identified him with the existentialists (see existentialism ), but he denied allegiance to that group; his works express rather a courageous humanism. The characters in his novels and plays, although keenly aware of the meaninglessness of the human condition, assert their humanity by rebelling against their circumstances.

Albert Camus (1913-1960) When you have once seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no vocation but to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him. In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.
