Jurgen Habermas
As a second-generation member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, Habermas was a student of Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno. In his wide-ranging and varied works (many listed below), he had broken with the anti-rationalist, anti-Westernist stance of the previous generation of Frankfurt theorists and taken a different route in his critical appraisal of Western institutions and rationality. Habermas stresses the humanist side of Marx's work as a critic, and has written on the Hegelian tensions between theory and practice in philosophy. Habermas is particularly notable for his defense of a Kantian conception of rationality, which have been assailed by other "postmodern" thinkers.
"Habermas combines a deep grounding in the philosophical tradition with a remarkable openness to a wide variety of contemporary philosophical and social theories. Entire books could be written about the respective influences of Kant and Hegel, Marx and Weber, Parsons and Piaget, and so on. The most important source is, however, without question the broad Marxist tradition which also inspired the original Frankfurt Institute for Social Research."(from Outhwaite, below)
Habermas works equally comfortably in the fields of sociology and philosophy, and his magnum opus

Jurgen Habermas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jürgen Habermas (born June 18 ) is a philosopher and social theorist who is probably the most important heir to Kant today not that he is strictly speaking a "Kantian," as a critical theorist he has been heavily influenced by the Hegelian traditionbut rather in the more general sense that he believes that through reason we can understand the world and achieve enlightenment. Habermas burst onto the German intellectual scene in the 1950s with an influential critique of the philosophy of Martin Heidegger . He studied philosophy and sociology under the critical theorists Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno at the Institute for Social Research at the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe university in Frankfurt am Main before becoming professor of philosophy at the university of Heidelberg and then at Frankfurt.

Jurgen Habermas
Ken Wilber, along with many others, calls him "the world's foremost living philosopher and social theorist." And with good reason. Jurgen Habermas, is the greatest philosopher of the late twentieth century. So, why have you probably never heard of him? Well, Habermas is a specialist in a world that no longer honors his speciality. Philosophers, once the leading thinkers and writers of human endeavor, are now reduced to academic mental masterbation. This is both symptomatic of our society's ills and a reflection of its rational poverty. So it goes. I have been a avid reader and follower of Jurgen Habermas' work since 1986. What initially caught my eye about him was his concept of "intersubjectivity." Here, according to Habermas, "ego stands in an interpersonal relationship, which allows him or her to relate to him-or herself as a participant in the interaction from the perspective of the other." Huh? Well, at the time I first read this, I had been working with various methods of meditation and other Eastern techniques for addressing life and fellow beings in a meaningful way. For me, Habermas offered the first geniunely RATIONAL means by which to do this. His teachings fundamentally influenced my life. Habermas taught for many years at the University of Frankfurt. He developed a "Critical Theory" of modern society that is, for me, an inspiration and has tremendous social potential, especially in today's "everything for ME" kind of world, a world where when some one talks about "human rights," they inevitably mean "individual rights." The idea of the "Group" or a "collective" sense of responsibility has become subserviant to the idea of a set of Individuals thriving more or less chaotically within loose social bonds and obligations. (This last is my opinion, not necessarily Habermas'.)

Jurgen Habermas Born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1929, Jurgen Habermas lived a portion of his young life in Nazi Germany. A member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, Habermas is perhaps one of the last modern thinkers to take up what is called the 'Enlightenment project.' This project is based on Habermas' definition of 'modernity,' the development of solutions to the problems of society through the use of reason and logic coupled with a break from tradition, habit, and obedience to strict religious conventions and prohibitions. Modernism followed this belief and therefore took on the project of the Enlightenment by lamenting the lost sense of purpose and coherence in society as well as a lost system of values. Habermas, however, views this lamentation as ineffective, and therefore calls for a return to Enlightenment order and reason. Habermas is an important figure in the study of Postmodernism in that he represents an opposing viewpoint. He called for an end to experimentation and a return to the previous order and traditional convention. He saw Modernism as having failed in its goal of the cultural aspect of Modernity, which sought to bring about solutions to society's problems by breaking with tradition. Habermas expands on this idea in his influential paper entitled "Modernity an Incomplete Project." Another key figure in the study of Postmodernism
