28. Dye, Hume And The American Deists On Miracles
Essay by James Dye discusses david hume's influence on the Deism of Ethan Allen, Thomas Paine, and Elihu Palmer.
http://sun.soci.niu.edu/~phildept/Dye/Miracles.html
Enquiry concerning Human Understanding E the History of England , his reputation as a notorious infidel clearly stemmed from the Natural History of Religion and the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding Part I ad hoc , case-by-case route to their goal. Further, the cases considered were normally those which were most at issue, namely those pertaining to the foundations of Christianity. More importantly, these are only examples, not the actual targets of the critique. His argument comprises two parts. The first is an epistemological analysis of the criteria for rational assent to any possibly true. The second part is a more or less empirical survey of the historical conditions which prevent actual miracle reports from satisfying the criteria established in the first part. E Divines law , i.e. that it holds in all cases, including this one? moral law; and almost all instances of his using the term to refer to physical Enquiry E impossibility of miracles. seeming E A miracle may be accurately defined, a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity, or by the interposition of some invisible agent. A miracle may either be discoverable by men or not. This alters not its nature and essence. (ibid.)

Hume's Life David Hume was the son of a minor Scottish landowner. His family wanted him to become a lawyer, but he felt an "insurmountable resistance to everything but philosophy and learning". Mr. Hume attended Edinburgh University, and in 1734 he moved to a French town called La Fleche to pursue philosophy. He later returned to Britain and began his literary career. As Hume built up his reputation, he gained more and more political power. Hume's Philosophy HUME'S WRITINGS In 1742, Hume wrote Essays Moral and Political . Then in 1748, he wrote An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and An Enquiry Concerning the Principals of Morals. WORKS ON INTERNET:

HUME'S BELIEFS Hume believed that all knowledge came from experience. He also believed that a person's experience's existed only in the person's mind. Hume believed that there was a world outside of human conscience, but he did not think this could be proved. Hume grouped perceptions and experiences into one of two categories: impressions and ideas . Ideas are memories of sensations claimed Hume, but impressions are the cause of the sensation. In other words, an impression is part of a temporary feeling, but an idea is the permanent impact of this feeling. Hume believed that ideas were just dull imitations of impressons.

Soon after completing his studies at Edinburgh, Scottish philosopher David Hume began writing his comprehensive statement of the views he believed would contribute to philosophy no less than Newton's had to science. But the public reception for the three books of his magisterial Treatise of Human Nature (1739) was less than cordial, and Hume abandoned his hopes of a philosophical career in order to support his family as a librarian, historian, diplomat, and political essayist, a course of action he described in the autobiographical My Own Life (1776). Hume's Essays Moral and Political (1741-1742) found some success, and the multi-volume History of England (1754-1762) finally secured the modest livelihood for which he had hoped. Although he spent most of his life trying to produce more effective statements of his philosophical views, he did not live to see the firm establishment of his reputation by the criticisms of Kant and much later appreciation of the logical positivists The central themes of Book I of the Treatise receive a somewhat more accessible treatment in An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748), a more popular summary of Hume's

. When pre-release copies of provoked controversy among influential readers, Hume and his printer Andrew Millar agreed to have the two essays physically removed from the printed copies. They were replaced with an essay titled "Of the Standard of Taste," and the book of essays appeared in 1757 under the title . Rumors about the two withdrawn essays circulated for years, and clandestine copies appeared anonymously in French (1770) and later in English (1777). In 1783 the two essays were published more openly, and this time with Hume's name attached. Like the 1770 and 1777 publications, the 1783 publication was not authorized by Hume. Along with Hume's two essays, the anonymous editor of the 1783 edition included his own critical notes to Hume's two pieces, and excerpts from Rousseau's on the subject of suicide. Life and Writings Berkeley was born at Dysert Castle, near Thomastown, Ireland, on March 12, 1685. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and received a B.A. (1704), M.A. and fellow (1707). He filled various college offices includ ing tutor, Junior Dean, and Junior Greek Lecturer. He lived there in an atmosphere "charged with the elements of reaction against traditional scholasticism in physics and metaphysics." His Philosophical Commentaries (first printed in 1871 under the title Common-Place Book ) was written from time to time during his undergraduate years as a kind of scrapbook of thoughts. The work indicates the great formative influence of Locke's Essay which was a text book at Trinity College, and appear s to have excited Berkeley to independent critical activity. In 1709 he published an Essay toward a New Theory of Vision , an examination of visual consciousness to prove that it affords no ground for belief in the reality of the objects apparently seen. In 1710 appeared a
