Born in Edinburgh on May 7, 1711, Hume was educated at home and at the University of Edinburgh, at which he matriculated at the age of 12. His health was poor, and after working for a short period in a business house in Bristol, he went to live in France. Life and Writings From 1734 to 1737 Hume occupied himself intensively with the problems of speculative philosophy and during this period wrote his most important philosophical work, A Treatise of Human Nature (3 vol., 1739-40), which embodies the essence of his thinking. In spite of its importance, this work was ignored by the public and was, as Hume himself said, "dead-born," probably because of its abstruse style. MIA Encyclopedia of Marxism : Glossary of People Hu Hume, David (1711-1776) Scottish philosopher (scepticism), psychologist and historian; held that task of knowledge is not to comprehend being, but to provide a guide to practical life (utilitarianism); the only objects of authentic knowledge could be mathematics since no other relations can be deduced by logic, but only from experience, which was after all only a "stream of impressions" whose causes are essentially unknowable. He held that the repeated occurrence of one event prior to another can form the basis for the formation of conceptual knowledge, but cannot constitute proof of cause-and-effect - "how do we know that the Sun will rise in the East tomorrow?" - but nevertheless knowledge can provide sufficient certainty to constitute the basis of practical life. Thus Hume attempted to rescue the positive content of Locke's philosophy from the subjectivist critique of Berkeley . See Hegel on Hume's contribution David Hume lived in the constitutional monarchy of George II under the Prime Ministers Walpole, Pelham and Pitt, a Britain which had thoroughly established a stable bourgeois system of government and was interested in building its Empire. Hume died in the year of the American War of Independence. Hume denied theological doctrines and acknowledged the evils that religion had wrought upon humanity. How was one to develop then a "secular" system of philosophy and morality. What answer could be given to Berkeley's "proof" that the concept of a material world beyond sensation was a "metaphysical absurdity"? How could we get on with science and industry, trade and conquest, without religion?

Back to Philosophy Hume, David Hume, David, 1711-76, Scottish philosopher and historian. Hume carried the empiricism of John Locke and George Berkeley to the logical extreme of radical skepticism. He repudiated the possibility of certain knowledge, finding in the mind nothing but a series of sensations, and held that cause-and-effect in the natural world derives solely from the conjunction of two impressions. Hume's skepticism is also evident in his writings on religion, in which he rejected any rational or natural theology. Besides his chief work, A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40), he wrote Political Discourses (1752), The Natural History of Religion (1755), and a History of England (1754-62) that was, despite errors of fact, the standard work for many years.

Hume, David David Hume (1711-76), best known as author of A Treatise of Human Nature Philosophical Essays concerning Human Understanding An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals The History of England (1754-62), and the posthumously published Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779), was a Scot born in Edinburgh. His analytical intelligence and skepticism joined with a temperamental preference for the consolations of common sense and ordinary life. He was both gregarious and a man apart. Hume's specific judgments of literature were conventional for his time. He liked Joseph Addison but disliked John Bunyan. He liked Thomas Otway's tragedies and did not much like John Dryden's comedies. In his essay "Of Eloquence," he credited Edmund Waller with a "cultivated genius" for poetry (106). The conventionality of these judgments contrasts with the originality of his aesthetic theory, as reflected especially in the essay "Of the Standard of Taste" (1757). This essay attempts to explain the contradictory sentiments of critics "with regard to beauty and deformity of all kinds," while common sense nonetheless denies "an equality of genius and elegance between Ogilby and Milton, or Bunyan and Addison" (227, 230-31). Hume regarded a priori reasoning about rules of composition as unacceptable, and he doubted the moral usefulness of literature. "Of the Standard of Taste" thus embraces empiricism but faces its unsettling consequences. In its antiformalism, its emphasis on the consensual, and its consequent claim that survival counts as an index of aesthetic value, Hume's argument resembles
