Note: the following has been abstracted from the Grolier Encyclopedia.
Edmund Husserl
Edmund Husserl, b. Apr. 8, 1859, d. Apr. 26, 1938, was a German philosopher who founded Phenomenology . He was professor at the universities of Gottingen (1901-16) and Freiburg (1916-29). At first a mathematician, he became interested in the philosophy of Franz Brentano, whose concept of intention was applied to the philosophy of consciousness in the maxim "all consciousness is consciousness of something." Husserl's description of the consciousness of time presented in The Phenomenology of Inner Time-Consciousness (1928; Eng. trans., 1964), the revisions of his logical theory in Formal and Transcendental Logic (1929; Eng. trans., 1969), his discussion of a person's experience of other minds in Cartesian Meditations (1931; Eng. trans., 1960), and his later emphasis on the basic nature of humans' lived relationship with the world (Lebenswelt) in Experience and Judgment (1939; Eng. trans., 1973) have influenced philosophers in many different fields. His most famous pupil was Martin Heidegger , who transformed Husserl's relatively cognitive phenomenological method into an Existentialism that dealt with the emotional and ethical significances of life as well as its perceptual, intellectual, and logical structures.

Biography Edmund Husserl was born April 8, 1859, into a Jewish family in the town of Prossnitz in Moravia, then a part of the Austrian Empire. Although there was a Jewish technical school in the town, Edmund's father, a clothing merchant, had the means and the inclination to send the boy away to Vienna at the age of 10 to begin his German classical education in the Realgymnasium of the capital. A year later, in 1870, Edmund transferred to the Staatsgymnasium in Olmütz, closer to home. He was remembered there as a mediocre student who nevertheless loved mathematics and science, "of blond and pale complexion, but of good appetite." He graduated in 1876 and went to Leipzig for university studies. At Leipzig Husserl studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy, and he was particularly intrigued with astronomy and optics. After two years he went to Berlin in 1878 for further studies in mathematics. He completed that work in Vienna, 1881-83, and received the doctorate with a dissertation on the theory of the calculus of variations. He was 24. Husserl briefly held an academic post in Berlin, then returned again to Vienna in 1884 and was able to attend Franz Brentano's lectures in philosophy. In 1886 he went to Halle, where he studied psychology and wrote his Habilitationsschrift on the concept of number. He also was baptized. The next year he became Privatdozent at Halle and married a woman from the Prossnitz Jewish community, Malvine Charlotte Steinschneider, who was baptized before the wedding. The couple had three children. They remained at Halle until 1901, and Husserl wrote his important early books there. The Habilitationsschrift was reworked into the first part of

It is perhaps the most concisely written of all the so-called "introductions." Finished in the years 1927-28 and (in a heavily edited and distorted version) published in the 14th ed. of

Seminar on Phenomenology
and Hermeneutics
The Seminar on Phenomenology and Hermeneutics is an outgrowth of a group which began in 1996 on the initiative of Dr. Pol Vandevelde and Dr. John Meech in order to read and discuss the works of Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology. The group, which continues to investigate central texts in phenomenology and hermeneutics, has also provided a forum for graduate students preparing theses in philosophy and theology to present and defend their ideas. In 2001, the Seminar on Phenomenology and Hermeneutics was initiated with joint support of Dr. John Jones, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Fr. Philip Rossi, Chair of the Department of Theology, and Dr. Michael McKinney, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This seminar was established to invite scholars outside the university to share their research in phenomenology and hermeneutics with our graduate students and faculty. Dr. Bradford Hinze from the Department of Theology joined as co-organizer. For more information, contact:
